Today, we observe Indigenous Peoples’ Day, a day in which we honor the histories, cultures, and invaluable contributions of Indigenous communities. On this day, we acknowledge that our very lives are built upon the ancestral lands of Indigenous people.
Take time today to engage with Indigenous histories and contemporary issues. Here are some ways to start:
Participate in continuous education
* Learn about the land: Use a website, such as as native-land.ca to acknowledge and educate yourself about the traditional territories of the Indigenous peoples.
* An Indigenous Peoples’ History of the United States by Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz - a reinterpretation of U.S. history through settler colonialism, dispossession, genocide, and Indigenous resistance.
* The Rediscovery of America: Native Peoples and the Unmaking of U.S. History by Ned Blackhaw - a reframing of American history with Indigenous Peoples and Nations at the center.
* A Taíno History of the Caribbean by Jalil Sued-Badillo - focuses on the history of the Indigenous folks who occupied what we know today as the Caribbean.
* Our History Is the Future by Nick Estes - connects the history of Indigenous resistance to Standing Rock and contemporary struggles over land, water, and sovereignty.
* First America, hosted by Rebecca Nagle - a podcast examining how Indigenous Nations shaped America across pivotal moments in the country’s history.
