Boston May Day Coalition statement on the upcoming elections:
The Boston May Day Coalition calls for all organizations concerned about the right to vote to prepare nationwide mass mobilizations in November to protect that right. The President, a would-be dictator, has threatened in effect to call a national emergency for the elections. Responding to a suggestion by a right-wing commentator that he do so, Trump said, "stranger things have happened, OK?" (https://www.cnn.com/2026/08/11/politics/trump-national-emergency-election).
Trump already staged a violent attempted coup to overturn the election of 2020. The putsch he attempted was widely repudiated but had the support of a large minority. He has labeled those who disagree with him "terrorists" and attempted to prosecute them. Contrary to the riot of January 6, 2021, Trump now has the statutory authority over hundreds of thousands of DHS, ICE, National Guard, and FBI agents and troops. His forces have occupied cities like Los Angeles, Minneapolis, and occupies Washington, DC with over 4000 troops to this day.
Trump's use of lethal force against protesters shows he understands that the final power resides in the streets── not in the courts or at the ballot box. We know that the two-party duopoly and their office holders actively discourage mobilizations that can challenge their primacy. Only a united front action coalition of civic organizations and unions in every state, nationwide, working weeks in advance, can mount the mobilizations of millions that will be required to defeat Trump’s next coup attempt which will begin on November 4.
