Tuesday, September 22nd
Fall weather is on the way, and 135 friends visited during the afternoon and evening. Frank again provided the sandwiches (pictured with Br. Anthony and Fr. Sal), which were so popular that the last one disappeared within minutes of our final stop. Fr. Sal joined us on the van for the first time. Recently transferred from a parish in New Paltz, New York, he is settling back into Boston, (where he completed graduate studies at Boston College), as he continues his Capuchin journey. St. Francis of Assisi followed the poor and humble Christ. He became a friend of the lepers and learned the meaning of poverty by staying among them. Minority, that is, being in close relationship to the material and spiritual poverty of other persons as well as the poverty within ourselves, is a hallmark of Franciscan life and spirituality. Brother Paul, a founder of Capuchin Mobile Ministries and a veteran of the Catholic Worker movement, recently shared with his brothers his understanding of poverty gained through personal experience in community with the poor. Thirty years ago, the Rev. Debbie Little celebrated the Eucharist on Boston Common with people who live on the streets, and an outdoor church called "common cathedral" was born. Thirty years later, Ecclesia Ministries - common cathedral continues to build spiritual community with the unhoused and the privileged. Capuchin Mobile Ministries has roots in common cathedral: Brother Paul was a part of the ministry team for several years, and Amanda Grant-Rose was executive director for over seven years. It was a pleasure to join common cathedral's 30th anniversary celebration today at Emmanuel Church. We saw many old friends, made new friends, and pledged ourselves anew to accompany the poor and affirm their dignity despite difficult circumstances.
