Banned in Boston 📚 Did you know ‘The Sun Also Rises’ was banned in Boston not long after it was published? The novel turns 100 this month. The controversy didn’t stop it from becoming one of the most celebrated and enduring works of the 20th-century.

100 years later, the sun is still rising☀️—and Hemingway’s words continue to inspire.

Thanks to the generosity of the Richard Hampton Jenrette Foundation, our team was on site at Finca Vigía to conduct a Preservation Assessment. This survey will identify and prioritize current preservation needs, providing a road map for long term sustainability.

Norma Cardenas-Flores was selected as the Research Fellow with the Finca Vigía Foundation. She is assisting renowned Preservation Architect William Dupont and Document Conservator Luisa Casella in conducting the assessment. Norma is from Texas and is currently pursuing graduate studies in Historic Preservation at the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Happy Labor Day Weekend! ⚒️✍️👷Ernest Hemingway’s image can be romantic—Cuba, fishing, drinking, adventure—but his creative life also depended on routine, persistence, and showing up to work.

At Finca Vigía, he was known to be disciplined and maintained a regular writing practice. The preservation of Finca Vigía gives us an extraordinary window into the life and work behind the legend—a place where the details of his daily world remain remarkably tangible.

This Labor Day let’s remember that behind every great book is the discipline to keep showing up—and behind every legacy, people working to preserve it.

70 years ago today, on August 13, 1956, Ernest Hemingway’s Cuban friends honored him with a grand fiesta. He later assembled a scrapbook documenting the celebration. It’s a rare and intimate glimpse into his life in Cuba. This scrapbook along with four others were later conserved with the support of the foundation.

What’s behind Hemingway in this photo? It’s the twisted root of a mangrove tree.
The root still hangs above the doorway in the library at Finca Vigía, exactly where Hemingway placed it—after inviting his kitty cat to enjoy it first 😉
As noted in ‘Great Houses of Havana’ by Hermes Mallea, Hemingway believed the mangrove root would protect the room from evil spirits.

Finca Vigía is a true time capsule. It was Hemingway’s home for one-third of his life, and every room, object, and detail offers a glimpse into the man behind the legend.
