70 years ago today, on August 13, 1956, Ernest Hemingway’s Cuban friends honored him with a grand fiesta. He later assembled a scrapbook documenting the celebration. It’s a rare and intimate glimpse into his life in Cuba. This scrapbook along with four others were later conserved with the support of the foundation.

What’s behind Hemingway in this photo? It’s the twisted root of a mangrove tree.
The root still hangs above the doorway in the library at Finca Vigía, exactly where Hemingway placed it—after inviting his kitty cat to enjoy it first 😉
As noted in ‘Great Houses of Havana’ by Hermes Mallea, Hemingway believed the mangrove root would protect the room from evil spirits.

Finca Vigía is a true time capsule. It was Hemingway’s home for one-third of his life, and every room, object, and detail offers a glimpse into the man behind the legend.

Hemingway’s writing toolkit: a typewriter, a cup of pencils, and paper—all still waiting in the writing tower at Finca Vigía, as if he just stepped out for a coffee.

What’s on your summer reading list? 📚🌊 Ernest Hemingway was an avid reader—apparently even in the water.

At Finca Vigía, every room (yes, even the bathroom!) is lined with bookshelves filled with the authors and subjects he loved most. Many of those books contain his handwritten notes, giving us a rare glimpse into the mind of one of America’s greatest writers.

Preserving this extraordinary library is an ongoing effort.
