UK paternity leave is properly screwing over mums.
Have you ever tried caring for a newborn alone, finally made it out the house, headed down the street, and then faced a mountain of steps at the tube? It sucks.
And that’s one tiny example of how we don’t cater for parents.
A less trivial example (not that stairs are trivial, especially if you’re in the 42% of mums who had a C-section birth) is that paternity leave in the UK is the worst in Europe. It’s two weeks at less than half the minimum wage, or nothing if you’re self employed.
It forces dads back to work too soon, leaving many mums to cope alone with a tiny baby. The result? Too many mothers pay the price with their physical and mental health.
On 27th Oct, there’s a debate in Parliament about raising statutory maternity and paternity pay—a crucial step alongside longer paternity leave.
So today I’m joining hundreds of and supporters to call for longer, better paid paternity leave in the UK.
