UK paternity leave is properly screwing over mums.

Have you ever tried caring for a newborn alone, finally made it out the house, headed down the street, and then faced a mountain of steps at the tube? It sucks.

And that’s one tiny example of how we don’t cater for parents.

A less trivial example (not that stairs are trivial, especially if you’re in the 42% of mums who had a C-section birth) is that paternity leave in the UK is the worst in Europe. It’s two weeks at less than half the minimum wage, or nothing if you’re self employed.

It forces dads back to work too soon, leaving many mums to cope alone with a tiny baby. The result? Too many mothers pay the price with their physical and mental health.

On 27th Oct, there’s a debate in Parliament about raising statutory maternity and paternity pay—a crucial step alongside longer paternity leave.

So today I’m joining hundreds of and supporters to call for longer, better paid paternity leave in the UK.

BREAKING NEWS! The government has announced today that they will do a formal review of the UK’s parental leave policy. This is huge news as paternity leave is currently only two weeks, which is the worst policy in Europe, and only one-third of dads take any paternity leave. Paternity leave hasn’t been changed in the past 22 years, it’s about time it’s changed.
What do I hope will come of the review?
📅 I’d like the 2 weeks of paternity leave to be
extended to 6 weeks leave
💸 I’d like it to be paid at 90% pay
🤯 I’d like government to reform the wildly over-
complicated Shared Parental Leave policy
🙏 And I’d like government to provide something (anything would be good!) for self-employed dads

progress

Two weeks isn’t enough. The UK has the worst paternity leave in Europe - Dads get only two weeks and it’s paid at less than half of minimum wage. Dads who are self employed don’t get any. We’re doing something about it. On 11th June, the world’s first ever dad’s strike is happening. Inspired by the women’s strike in Iceland that happened in 1975 and again in 2023 in a campaign for gender equality, dads all over the UK will be striking against the dire paternity leave we get in this country ➡️ Sign up to strike with in the link in my bio

Mums are doing it all, or nearly it all. Dads are doing the bins 👀 In recent research, mums reported greater responsibility than their partners for the cognitive labor (i.e., the mental load - the thinking, planning, organising, researching) of 29 out of 30 tasks and the physical household labor (i.e., the actual doing) for 28 out of 30 tasks.

Taking out the bins was the only task where partners were responsible for both the thinking and the doing of the task, and home maintenance was the only other task where partners were responsible for the physical labour.

⚠️ WARNING: it’s not going to happen overnight, it’s going to take time! But revisiting your background to chores is the best place to start, and it’ll be so worth it

My partner doesn’t have any idea of the steps it takes to find a cat sitter…

1. Research options and check if they’re any good
2. Sort out how the cat sitter will get into our house - should we give them a key? Is that secure? Do we need to hide valuables?
3. Order enough food and cat litter ahead of time to make sure they don’t run out
4. Give instructions for everything - how much our cats eats, their favourite toys, where everything lives, what to do if there are any problems, contact details if they need us etc.
5. Pay them!

It sounds small, but all these things add up, and feel totally invisible to my partner. Would be nice if they were factored in and shared

Tag your partner if you wished they knew too!

Gender stereotypes are everywhere, once you start to look for them

This example may seem harmless, but what this poster implies is that it’s widely accepted that it’s a mum’s job to wash dishes - reinforcing harmful and outdated gender stereotypes about women’s roles in the home

Would it work if the poster said “Your dad is not here, wash your own dishes”? Somehow it seems unlikely…

We’re 131 years away from gender equality

It has a lot to do with the unequal division of domestic labour - women all around the world do the lion’s share of unpaid housework and childcare

The good news is attitudes are changing - 70-90% of men *feel* as responsible for care work as their partner

The bad news is behaviour is changing incredibly slowly - in the Global North, women do 1.2-2x more unpaid care work than men, and in the Global South, they do 3-7x as much unpaid care work
