Summer Serenade at the Frederick Law Olmsted National Historic Site is tomorrow! Time to highlight the incredible composers featured in our last Neighborhood Concert of the 2025-2026 season.

Elena Ruehr's "Trois Gymnopedies" are three movements inspired by
Satie and Debussy. The titles are a kind of poem that harken back to her childhood when she lived on the edge of a great forest near the shores of Lake Superior in Michigan.

Andrea Clearfield's "...and low to the lake falls home" was commissioned by and dedicated to her dear friend and acclaimed flutist, Carol Wincenc. The second movement is a reflection on melody, mother, and memory. The third is a romp in the face of death – turning, dancing, spinning, laughing “while we may.”

Gabriela Lena Frank wrote "Soliloquio Serrano No. 2" for violist Margaret Audrey Snyder. The piece draws inspiration from Latin American influences, as many of Frank’s pieces do; and it is to be performed as a soliloquy, or a monologue addressed to oneself.

Soyoka Hayashi's “Ibuki” is a Juventas commission! Ibuki is a Japanese word, written with the kanji characters for breath and blow. It is also used to convey the sense of life or the flow of energy present in nature, humans, or objects. In this piece, Hayashi aims to capture the transition from the harsh cold of winter to the warmer, more vibrant spring, as life begins to awaken and grow once again.

Philip White was commissioned to write his "Trio for Flute, Viola, and Harp" by his friend Meredith Crawford for her harp trio's performance. He composed two movements for the occasion, before realizing it needed a third movement ten years later.
