She thought she knew what he needed.

When our co-founder Dr. Sameena Zahoor welcomed her first foster son, she already had three boys of her own. She pictured kids to play with, a safe place to live, all the food he wanted. She thought he'd be happy right away.

He cried. For a long time.

So she pitched a tent in her son's room. He slept there for a couple of nights, until he felt safe enough for a regular bed.

"All I was thinking of was what he was leaving and what he was gaining by moving in with us. And really, he was experiencing everything he had just lost."

Fostering isn't for every family, or every phase of life. But there's always something you can do. Foster children need more than a safe place to stay. They need a community.

Ten years.

That's Seringe, talking about his mentor Shaikh — the one who always had good advice, and always offered it in a positive way.

Mentorship rarely looks dramatic. It looks like a phone call, a word about a job, someone who keeps showing up. Today Seringe has a job he loves and a career ahead of him.

"Congratulations for the ten years," he told us, "and there is more to come, inshallah."

She came to MFCA at the age of 14. What she's been through is part of her story — but it isn't the end of it. Her goals are still hers to reach, and so are yours.

"I'm really grateful to MFCA for being a part of my life," she told us, "and happy ten years."

Najla came to MFCA at the age of 14. She's twenty-two now, and when we asked what MFCA and the mentorship program gave her, she didn't name a program or a service. She named people — people who actually cared about her and wanted to see her do good.

In the next five to ten years, she sees herself independent, in her own place, with a career she loves, and happy with her life. We're honored to be part of the road there.
