Lion of Judah Speaks Parashah: Gen. 18:1-22:24 10/31/2026

In this Torah portion what is YHVH teaching us today? As we look at the early history of mankind as told by Torah, we see a series of disappointments. Elohim gives us freedom, which in turn we misuse. Adam and Chava ate the forbidden fruit. Cain murders his brother Abel and only a short time later the world is so perverted and the people become very corrupt.
Elohim creates order and man creates chaos. The flood comes and destroys or cleanses the world but then after the flood we have the Tower of Babel. We failed to respond to Elohim which is where Abraham enters the picture.
What is Abraham summoned to do? We know he is to leave his land, birthplace, and father’s house and travel to a land that Elohim will show him. However, what is he to do there. We do not know. On this the Torah is silent. What is Abraham’s mission? What is your mission? What makes him special? What makes you special?
What makes him not simply a good man in a bad age, like Noach, but a leader and the father of a nation of leaders? What do we have to offer? In latter portions we saw three failures of responsibility. 1. Adam and Chava’s lack of personal responsibility. You remember, “It wasn’t my fault, it was the woman.” “It wasn’t my fault; it was the serpent.” They both denied being the author’s of their own acts as if they do not understand either freedom or the response it entails.
2. Cain denies moral responsibility by saying, “Abel provoked me…Am I my brother’s keeper.? 3. Noach fails the test of collective responsibility. He is a man of virtue in an age of vice, but makes no impact on his contemporaries. He saves his family and animals, which is commendable, but no one else. When reading the plain text…He doesn’t try! Please if we understand this, we will understand, not only Abraham, but we will understand ourselves!
Abraham exercises personal responsibility in Genesis 13:8-9. When the two tribes quarrel, Abraham and Lot’s herdsman, Abraham proposes a solution. Abraham passes no judgment. He doesn’t ask whose fault it is or who will gain from the outcome. He gives Lot the choice. He sees the problem and acts!
In Genesis 14 there is a local war that erupts and as a result Lot is taken captive. Abraham immediately gathers a force, pursues the invaders, and rescues Lot and captives and then returns them all home safe. We see in Genesis 14:21-24 that Abraham refuses to take any spoils. Abraham shows he is his brother’s keeper. He understands the nature of moral responsibility despite the fact that Lot had chosen to live where he did with all the risks.
Notice that Abraham didn’t say, “His safety is his responsibility not mine.” So, now in this portion we come to a great moment at which for the first time a human being challenges Elohim Himself in Genesis 18:20-25. What a speech but by what right does a mere mortal challenge Elohim Himself? The short answer…Elohim Himself signaled that he should.
Listen to a short part of the text in Genesis 18:16-21, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do?
These words are a clear hint that Elohim wants Abraham to respond; otherwise, why would He have said them? We understand Abraham only against the backdrop of the story of Noach. Elohim told Noach in Genesis 6:13 in advance that he is about to bring punishment to the world…Noach did not protest! In fact, it is the contrary, “Noach did as Elohim commanded him: is said three times in Scripture. Noach accepted the verdict but Abraham challenged it!
The reason is because Abraham understood the 3rd principle, collective responsibility. Listen, the people of S***m were not his brothers or sisters. So, in reality he was going beyond what he did in rescuing Lot. He prayed on their behalf because he understood that we are connected. However, the question remains, why did Elohim call on Abraham to challenge Him? Was there anything Abraham knew that Elohim didn’t know? This idea is absurd!
Here is the answer about Abraham and even the answer about each one of us. Abraham was to become the role model and initiator of a new faith, one that would not defend the human status quo, but challenge it! Abraham had to have the courage to challenge Elohim if his descendants were to challenge human rulers, just like Moshe and the prophets did.
As believers, Torah followers or Messianic disciples, we do not accept the world that is. We challenge it in the name of Yeshua HaMashiach and how it ought to be. Matthew 6:9-13 says, “You therefore, pray like this: Our Father in heaven! May your name be kept holy. May your Kingdom come; your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us the food we need today. Forgive us what we have done wrong, as we too have forgiven those who have wronged us. And do not lead us into hard testing, but keep us safe from the Evil One. For kingship, power and glory are yours forever.”
What a turning point! WOW! A faith that challenges the world instead of accepting it! What a role model of leadership. He is our role model. He took responsibility. He acted. He didn’t wait for others to act. We might say, “we need people praying at the altar” …then pray! “We need people to allow Elohim to move” …then allow Him to move!
The Torah speaks of Noach by saying in Genesis 6:9 that “Noach walked with Elohim,” but to Abraham Elohim said in Genesis 17:1, “Walk before Me.” “Walk before Me” means to be a leader, to walk ahead, take personal responsibility, take moral responsibility and to take collective responsibility.
We as a Kehillah and we as individuals are called to “walk before Elohim.” We are called to be a leader! We are called to walk ahead! We are called to take personal (ME), moral (YOU) and collective (congregation) responsibility. We are called to be a role model…so let’s walk in it!
Like Abraham we have departed, went away, broke from, crushed and tread into pieces traditions, unscriptural beliefs, and pagan ways in order to walk before Him. To live a holy life that produces the fruit of our Master. We take it seriously and therefore, we accept personal, moral, and collective responsibility. This isn’t a game we are playing…it is REAL LIFE!
