When the Owners purchased this modest 1985 beach cottage in 2019, their original intent was to tear it down and rebuild. However, living there during Covid gave them time to develop a new appreciation for the small space that better suited the couple and their new puppy. They also felt it was important to preserve the familiar small salt box form that has been gradually replaced throughout town with much larger homes. Rather than expanding their footprint, their new plan was to renovate the interior space and focus instead on creating improved access to the exterior space for maximum enjoyment of the outdoors.

A new second floor front entry, hidden behind a slatted stair tower, bypasses the lower level to access the main living area upstairs, hinting at the stylish contemporary makeover inside. A light- washed entry hall leads past the primary bedroom suite to the open living space beyond. There, white shiplap on the walls and a soaring vaulted ceiling create a sense of spaciousness that belies the small square footage. South-facing windows across the back of the house add natural light and cross ventilation as well as access to an elevated bridge leading to a tree-shaded upper dining deck. Back inside two levels of open bookshelves flank a dramatic steel and maple hanging stairway that separates the main floor from the guest quarters below. Two bedrooms, an office and a bar provide privacy for visitors and easy access to the detached screen porch and plunge pool out back.

Tucked away at the end of a scenic road in Fenwick Island, this week’s home rests on an idyllic bayfront lot. While the owners enjoy the beach, they choose to live on the bay. As they explain, “We aren’t up for many sunrises, so we prefer the bay for its sunsets.” Built in 1994, the house was renovated for sale by its second owner. When the owners purchased the unfurnished property in August 2025, they looked past the wall colors, named the home “The Last Resort”, a playful nod to its location, and set out to make it their own.

The interior pairs coastal charm with a modern feel. A contemporary front door opens to a foyer with a lighted staircase and a striking pendant that draws the eye upward. On the wall, a large framed nautical flag representing the letter “B” once flew on a ship and is now displayed as a tribute to their last name and a celebratory nod to the family’s dream home. The sunken living room with modern furnishings features sweeping bay views and a surfboard on the wall – one of several throughout the house – underscores its beach-inspired theme. Throughout the home, white walls give a fresh, modern look while nautical and coastal accents add to its appeal.

The owners wanted to find a vacation destination that could serve as their future retirement home. They selected the Bay Forest Club community for its impressive amenities, proximity to the beach, and convenient distance from their primary residence. They chose a spacious corner lot with bay and woodland views, and the home was completed in 2024.

The owners embraced the opportunity to create a residence that was very different in style, décor, and color palette from their primary home. They describe their new home as having “strong Craftsman architecture softened with coastal finishes.” In keeping with its tradition, the home showcases timeless woodwork, board-and-batten cabinetry, and open, uncluttered spaces. Wide wainscoting decorates the open living room and a coffered ceiling highlights the upstairs family room. Off-white walls unify the interior spaces, with accents of pale green, blue, and gray tones that shift with sunlight. Warm neutrals, cool navy, and subtle patterns give the structured furnishings a welcoming, coastal feel.

In keeping with their love of the outdoors, the homeowners took full advantage of the outside space surrounding their home. They have an open front and back porch, a screened side porch, a dining porch and a grilling deck. The owners acknowledge this is where they spend most of their time in warmer weather. Cushioned seating, a large TV, beverage fridge, lighting, and wood-planked ceilings with overhead fans create a space that is ideal for both large gatherings and quiet solitude.

This historic midcentury cottage, tucked into the dunes of old Fenwick, is a hidden treasure from bygone beach days. Surrounded by decades of family mementos, the Owner presides over her grandparents’ shingled seaside home preserving the memories of four generations of her family who have spent summers here.

The two story three-bedroom cottage sits on pilings just behind the sand dune and is flanked on two sides by open decking. It retains its original knotty pine paneling, hardwood floors and exposed wood beams as well as much of the Owner’s grandparents’ furnishings, reupholstered and updated many times over. The home is filled with family mementos and multiple collections reflecting their long history here as well as Owner’s love of marine life.

The home was one of the few in Fenwick that survived the infamous 1962 Nor’easter. The fireplace literally held the house up through the storm as the ocean flowed beneath it, leaving it as a lasting tribute to the solid foundation the grandfather created for his family.
