The History of Flag Day

As we celebrate Flag Day and show our pride in our nation by hanging a new Old Glory outside for all to see. Some of you may wonder how this all got started. Flag Day was not something that started right away as you would think. This all started with our flag being adopted by the Continental Congress. That happened on 14 June 1777, and that was two years into the Revolutionary War. When Congress approved the resolution for the flag, Congress said it had to be, “That the flag of the United States be Thirteen alternate Stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field representing a new constellation.” Our nation’s flag became known as the Stars and Stripes and was based on the Grand Union Flag carried by the Continental Army back in 1776. That flag consisted of 13 red and white stripes and became the bases of our Stars and Stripes. Since this date there have been five major changes to the flag.
Flag Day got its first step in Wisconsin, by a teacher by the name of Bernard Cigrand. It is said that he placed a small flag on his desk and had his students write a paper on what the nation’s flag meant to them. He argued, year after year, to have declared an official Flag Day. From that point a number of patriotic groups heard of what the Wisconsin teacher was doing and pushed for a number of years for a nationwide Flag Day. Then in 1916, President Woodrow Wilson declared a proclamation that the 14th of June shall be called National Flag Day. Then Congress in 1949 made Flag Day 14th of June, official.
For many Veterans the flag is a matter of pride, and that many of our brothers and sisters have been buried under that flag. There have been many reports over the last 250 years where a service member gave their life to retrieve the flag from the battlefield. Today our flag represents fifty states, and the red and white stripes represent where we started when we only had thirteen states.
