September is super busy and for us - that's a good thing! Check out what we have in store for the community.....

On September 5, we're teaming up with Diamondback Music Hall for Saddle Up & Give Back... a country night with a purpose. Line dancing, live music, and a whole lot of good people showing up for kids in foster care. Wear green for Guiding Harbor and come dance with us.

September 8th - join us if you are interested in learning more about becoming a foster or adoptive parent. All kinds of families are welcome!

On September 12, our Community Sale & Family Market is back — 8:45 AM to 2:45 PM at
525 E Huron River Dr. Free to get in, plenty to browse, and every dollar goes right back into the work.

Some wins deserve to be celebrated. 💐

Following an unimaginable family loss, a sibling set found love, stability, and a forever home with relatives who stepped forward when they were needed most. Guiding Harbor was honored to support this family through every step of the adoption process.

What many people may not realize is just how much happens behind the scenes to make an adoption possible. There are countless documents, deadlines, court requirements, and hours of careful coordination, and the process can often take a very long time.

Thanks to the extraordinary dedication and attention to detail of our Guiding Harbor team, this adoption was finalized in record time. The work was so thorough that the court reached out to formally commend our staff—recognition that is both rare and deeply meaningful in this field.

We are grateful to the Wayne County court system for recognizing the care and commitment our team brought to this case. In work where accolades can be few and far between, we believe people deserve their flowers in the here and now. Today, we proudly celebrate our incredible staff and the forever family they helped secure. 💙

One day, we hope to share more of this family’s beautiful story, in their own words and on their own terms. For now, we simply celebrate a joyful new beginning and the people who worked tirelessly to make it possible.

Troy and Summer are graduates of Guiding Harbor's Independent Living Plus program. Getting them to this door took the better part of a year. Learning to budget. Filling out the application. Setting up utilities. Figuring out what renters insurance even is. The things most young adults learn from a parent.

Local partners donated every piece of furniture in the place.

For most young people who age out of foster care, this moment never comes. There is no safety net at 18. No one to cosign a lease. No basement to fall back into. Independent Living Plus exists to change that.

Troy put it this way: "It really just represents me being my own person."

Our team is looking for volunteer mentors, people willing to teach young adults practical money skills as they start out on their own. If that sounds like you, reach out.

🎄 Help Us Make Christmas Magic Happen! 🎁

Guiding Harbor is preparing for Christmas Gift Delivery Day on Saturday, December 5, 2026, and we need volunteers to help unload, organize, and sort presents for the children and families we serve.

Because the gifts will arrive by semi-truck at Willow Run Airport sometime between 9:00 a.m. and noon, this is an on-call opportunity. Once we receive confirmation that the truck is on the way, volunteers will be notified and will have approximately 30–45 minutes to arrive.

There are two ways to help:

✈️ Airport Delivery Team
Unload gifts from the semi-truck and load them onto Guiding Harbor’s truck at Willow Run Airport.

🎁 Administration Delivery Team
Unload, organize, and sort the gifts once they arrive at our Administration Building.

Sign up for one team or both, depending on your availability. A few hours of your time can help create a joyful Christmas for children and families in our community.

A HUGE thank you to Atchinson Ford for helping our Girlstown kiddos trade everyday worries for roller coasters, laughter, and a day of simply being kids at Cedar Point! 🎢💚

Because of Atchinson Ford’s generous sponsorship, our girls were able to make memories, have fun, and experience the kind of carefree childhood moments every kid deserves.

At Guiding Harbor, we believe childhood should include joy, adventure, laughter, and opportunities to just be a kid. Experiences like this are possible because of community partners who believe in the young people we serve and invest in giving them brighter, happier memories.
