What did a normal day look like in Boggs Township 150 years ago?

The answer isn't found in the records of major historical events. It's in the in the dairies of locals and community newspapers: what families planted and canned, when the hunting season began, who stopped by for a visit, what people wrote about in their diaries, and the everyday news recorded in local newspapers.

These small details tell a much bigger story.

At the Advent Historical Society, we're preserving the records, stories, and voices that reveal what life was really like in the Marsh Creek community during the 19th and 20th centuries.

Because sometimes the most fascinating history isn't the extraordinary. It's the ordinary.

Step into Centre County's past with a tour of the historic Advent Church in Milesburg, Pennsylvania.

The church's story begins with the "Great Disappointment" of 1844, when Adventist preacher William Miller predicted that the Second Coming of Christ would occur that year. When the predicted event did not happen, the movement faced a profound crisis—but its story did not end there.

Today, the Advent Church offers a fascinating glimpse into this 19th-century religious movement and Pennsylvania's Second Advent history. Just as importantly, it provides a window into everyday community life in rural Centre County during the mid-1800s.

Every old building has a story. Advent Church has several.

There's the story of the Millerite movement that brought Adventist missionaries into rural Centre County in the 1840s — and the congregation they gathered in the hills of Boggs Township.

There's the story of the families buried in the cemetery next door: farmers, iron workers, Civil War soldiers, and the generations that followed them.

And there's the story of what almost happened — and what a handful of determined people did to make sure it didn't.

Without the historical writings of Emma Confer Watson, we might know very little about everyday life in Boggs Township, Pennsylvania, during the early 1900s.

Through her Holt's Hollow column in the Centre Democrat, Watson preserved a remarkable record of rural community life. Her articles chronicle church gatherings, celebrations, family reunions, and other social events, offering a vivid glimpse into the people, traditions, and close-knit communities that shaped the area more than a century ago.

Long before it became the white church on the hill that so many recognize today, Advent Church began with a bold belief.

Built in 1849 by followers of William Miller, a Vermont farmer whose teachings inspired the Adventist movement, the church stands on land donated by General James Irvin and Colonel Andrew Gregg, owners of the Milesburg Iron Furnace.

Over the decades, the congregation changed and new chapters were written. The Evangelical Adventists worshipped here until the early 1900s, and in the 1940s the church became home to the God's Missionary Church congregation.

Through it all, one thing has remained constant: this hillside has been a gathering place for generations of Centre County families.

The buildings we preserve aren't just made of wood and nails. They're built from the stories of the people who came before us.

Standing at the top of a hill on Moose Run Road in Boggs Township, Advent Church has watched more than 175 years of Centre County history unfold.

Built by a congregation of Adventist missionaries in the 1840s, the church was nearly lost to demolition before a group of dedicated volunteers stepped in to save it. What they preserved wasn't just a building — it was a record of the families, the faith, and the rural community that gathered here for generations.

Today, the Advent Historical Society continues that work: maintaining the property, expanding the archive, and making sure the story of this place is told and remembered.
