The best parts of a community aren’t always the things you can put on a map.

They’re the people who know your name. The neighbor who checks in. The volunteer who keeps showing up. The local organization that brings people together. The hands that care for the places, traditions and stories that have been here for generations.

That’s what community looks like at its best: people taking care of a place because they believe it’s worth caring for.

You've probably seen it.

The white church sitting at the top of the hill along Moose Run Road.

But there's a difference between recognizing a place and knowing its story.

Advent Church has stood here since 1849, surrounded by the landscape that shaped the lives of the people who gathered here. The fields, hillside, cemetery, and church aren't separate pieces of the story. Together, they tell us something about the rural community that grew around this place.

Next time you pass the church on the hill, remember: there's more here than meets the eye.

There's nearly two centuries of history waiting to be discovered.

A community doesn’t take care of itself.

It happens because people show up. They lend a hand, tend to the places they love, welcome a neighbor, support a local business and pass along the traditions that make a place feel like home.

At Advent, we’re reminded that caring for a community is something we do together, one small act at a time.

A little Oktoberfest spirit, a lot of musical history, and another memorable afternoon at the church on the hill.

Thank you to The Little German Band for bringing traditional German marches, waltzes, polkas, and favorites to Advent Church. Since 1961, the band has helped celebrate Pennsylvania's German cultural heritage, and we were delighted to welcome them for the final Music at the Advent concert of the 2026 season.

From the music filling the historic church to c***r and donuts shared afterward, it was a wonderful way to bring the season to a close.

Thank you to the musicians, everyone who joined us, and all those who help keep Advent's doors open for gatherings like these.

Until the next song, we'll keep preserving the place and sharing the stories that make it special!

Born to Ezekiel Confer and Charity A. Packer on June 4, 1876, Emma Laura (Confer) Watson was a prominent member of the Advent Church and a beloved voice of the community, known for documenting the daily lives of families and friends. Together, Emma and her husband, John Thomas Watson, raised fourteen children, many of whom are buried in Advent Cemetery. Through her column, “Holts Hollow,” published in the Centre Democrat from 1924 to 1945, Emma chronicled the social life of the community, including picnics, camp meetings, and worship services at the Advent Church.

Then and now, there’s a certain kind of beauty in rural life.

A family farm becomes the next generation’s responsibility. A well-worn tradition gets passed down. An old building finds a new purpose. A familiar landscape changes while somehow remaining unmistakably home.

Rural communities aren’t frozen in time. They’re living, evolving places, shaped by the people who came before us and the people deciding what comes next.

That’s the story worth telling.

In 1843, a Vermont farmer named William Miller convinced thousands that Christ's Second Coming was at hand but when the date passed, it became known as "the Great Disappointment." A core group of believers in the ridges of the Bald Eagle Valley didn't give up the message and in 1849, they built the Marsh Creek Advent Church.

That little white church is still standing on Moose Run Road today, and 176 years later, we're still telling its story.

Since 1849, the historic Advent Cemetery has been a final resting place for generations of local families and church members. Today, this active cemetery continues to be cared for by the nonprofit Advent Cemetery Association.

Cemetery plots are available for those looking for a meaningful place to carry on their family’s connection to the community.

Many burial records can also be found online through Find a Grave and the Centre County PAGenWeb Project—making it easier to explore the families and stories connected to Advent Cemetery.
