Unfortunately, we are going to have to cancel the Stream Quality Monitoring (SQM) program for tomorrow. Conditions at Jacoby Canoe Launch are not ideal for sampling and don't seem to be improving as quickly as we had hoped after this week's rainfall.

Please consider joining us next week for the 16th Annual Cleanup on the river and along the tributaries!

We look forward to hosting everyone at SQMs scheduled for July 22nd, 6-8pm, and September 12th, 1-3 pm; all will take place at Jacoby Canoe Launch as well.

With all the rain we're getting it seems a perfect time to remind everyone that DIY rain barrels and kits are available for purchase at our office, M-F 8-4 by cash or check or with your card at www.montgomeryswcd.org for only $75. White or blue barrels.

Thank you Dr Sheehan for presenting your informative and exciting research on headwaters and streams! We had a great crowd with a lot of thoughtful questions. Thank you also to the Green Team at Christ Church United Methodist for hosting with yummy treats and a welcoming space.

REMINDER TONIGHT (5/20 6:30pm) 3440 Shroyer Rd, Kettering, OH 45429 (Christ Church United Methodist Community meeting space).

Help us welcome University of Dayton professor Christopher Sheehan and graduate student Lauren Claas will speak on their research of small headwater streams.

Southwestern Ohio’s water-resource resilience is closely tied to the Miami Aquifer system, which is largely recharged by small headwater streams. Headwater streams make up roughly 80% of all stream channels globally, yet they have historically been among the least studied components of river networks. From 2025–2026, speakers Cris and Lauren led a team that monitored water level and discharge in three headwater streams in Carriage Hill MetroPark. Using National Weather Service radar precipitation data together with hydrological modeling, we quantified the relationships among rainfall intensity, soil moisture, and headwater stream discharge. These relationships will be used to evaluate future erosion hazards and potential changes in regional groundwater resources associated with land-use change and climate variability.
