Another fantastic day at Holyoke Opportunity Academy.

We focused on genetics and discussed how traits such as comb types, feathered feet, muffs, and crests can be specifically bred.

We learned that chickens have been used in recent cancer research and are finding new ways to help humans!

We also got a real-time teachable moment when Deb laid an egg in the middle of the lesson!

Animals really are the best curriculuar resources inviting everyone the conversation!

Today was another wonderful day working with Holyoke Opportunity Academy!

We focused on genetics looking at various traits including comb types, feathered feet, crests and muffs and focused on how chickens have been used in scientific research to fight cancer!

🎄 Merry Christmas & Happy New Year from Kay & Co. 🎄

As we close out this year, we want to pause and say thank you. To the families, students, educators, and community members who believe in learning that is hands-on, humane, and deeply rooted in real experience.

This season finds us hopeful.

We are currently awaiting the outcome of our state appeal, which, if successful, will allow us to fully expand Kay & Co.’s educational operations. Our goal remains unchanged: to create a place where students can learn science, literacy, responsibility, and care through meaningful interaction with animals, land, and community.

The appeal process has slowed our timeline, but it has not slowed our purpose. In fact, it has sharpened it.

Looking ahead to the new year, we are excited about what could be possible:
• Expanded programming for students
• Deeper partnerships with educators and families
• A learning environment where curiosity, stewardship, and belonging are central

We believe strongly that education doesn’t only happen at desks, it happens through doing, observing, questioning, and caring for the world around us.

Thank you for standing with us, asking good questions, and holding space for the work we are building.
We look forward to sharing more soon.

We want to share an important update with our community.

At tonight’s meeting, the Zoning Board of Appeals voted to deny our Dover Amendment protections, along with the related variance and special permit requests for Kayla & Co.’s educational programming.

We respectfully disagree with this decision. The Dover Amendment exists to protect educational uses under Massachusetts law, and we believe the Board’s conclusions do not accurately reflect either the facts on record or the legal standards that apply.

As a result, we will be formally appealing the decision through the appropriate legal process.

This is not a step we take lightly, but we remain committed to ensuring that educational programs, especially those serving diverse learners and families, are afforded the protections guaranteed to them under state law.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who has supported us, spoken up, written letters, or simply taken the time to learn about what we are building. We will continue to move forward thoughtfully, transparently, and with the long view in mind.

More information will be shared as the appeal proceeds.

At Kayla & Co., safety isn’t a slogan, it’s a lived experience you can see.

This little rooster found the warmest spot in the house today and settled in without hesitation.

Animals don’t pretend, and they don’t negotiate. They feel what’s real.

When they choose rest, it means the environment is safe.

When they choose us, it means we’re doing something right.

That’s the heart of our work: building spaces where kids, families, and animals feel protected, valued, and at ease.

Not perfect, just safe enough to grow.

Small towns thrive when small businesses and local nonprofits are given room to grow.

Places like Belchertown depend on the work done quietly: the services, programs, care, and community-building that don’t always make headlines but absolutely shape the future of a town.

At Kayla & Co., we’ve seen firsthand how much impact one small organization can have:
supporting families, creating hands-on learning experiences, building safe spaces for neurodiverse and vulnerable learners, and offering services that larger systems simply can't replicate with the same personal touch.

That’s why it’s so important that local regulations evolve with the community they serve.

Belchertown has changed.

Families have changed.

Needs have changed.

And sometimes, older zoning language or mismatched designations — especially in areas originally planned as Open Space Community Developments (OSCDs) — can unintentionally limit the very community benefits they were meant to encourage.

We believe small towns deserve space where good work can continue.

Where mission-driven programs aren’t boxed out by outdated definitions.

Where families and local youth have real opportunities to learn, grow, and belong.

Belchertown is strongest when innovation and tradition work together, not against each other.

We’re committed to serving this town, its children, and its families.

We hope to continue doing so with the support of a community that understands that when small organizations flourish, the whole town does too. 💛🏡

As the colder months settle in, we’ve been preparing the coops, reinforcing shelters, and making sure every one of our animals has what they need to stay warm, healthy, and supported.

What we do here at Kayla & Co. has always been bigger than farming. It’s about practicing the habits we hope to model for the people we serve; planning ahead, creating safety, reducing stress, and building spaces where growth can continue even when the environment gets tougher.

Winter care isn’t just insulation and clean bedding.

It’s a reminder:

That support must be intentional, not reactive.

That well-being is something we build, not something we hope for.

That preparation is an act of care, whether we’re tending animals, supporting families, or guiding learners who rely on stable environments to thrive.

As we ready the coops for the season, we’re also preparing ourselves: strengthening routines, protecting our mission, and staying focused on creating a place where compassion, structure, and purpose live side by side.

Here’s to a warm season ahead — for our flock, our families, and our community.
