Celebrating the birth of Darryl Hell

I LOVE YOU and I’m so grateful that our lives are intertwined. I drew this picture soon after Darryl and I first met. I didn’t date the picture, so I’m guessing it was 2004. Based on the scribbled information on the color palette selection page, I probably drew it on a Sunday morning while we were listening to an interview with Dr. Joy De Gruy Leary on LIKE IT IS by Gil Noble.

To know Darryl is to be inspired by his many outlets of creativity:

🌑 The recently released 12 episode documentary series ECHOES OF THE SOUNDS OF NEW YORK which he created and edited. Available exclusively on Vimeo on demand

🌑 Scratching for the industrial, punk, hard rock collective new album APOCALYSE PENDING

🌑 A monthly article > “MECHANIZED RESISTANCE from the mind of Darryl Hell” < for noisewire.org

🌑 PUBLIC DISTURBSNCE his punk band from the 1980’s being re-released on yellow vinyl by

🌑 His transformational work as steward of the Hancock community garden park and teaching and mentoring high school students at Bronx Academy of letters.

If you can give a birthday gift to Darryl > read the articles, watch the series, purchase a record, and/or give Darryl a birthday hug when you see him!

LOAM
A Subterranean Requiem

Taking cues from biological processes found in soil as a foundation, LOAM by explores our changing planet through a lens of collective grief. By experiencing movement as a series of slowly unfolding, minuscule moments, LOAM invites us to look closer, breathe deeper, and to challenge unrelenting velocity as a way of life.

OFF THE RECORD is
an intervention
an invitation
a humorous, delightful, and insightful journey
a call to action
GO Experience!!!!

I’m in awe of how writes and creates a world that is deeply funny, painfully real, and immediately gets me involved in the questions and problem solving.

at now through Sunday April 19 > 146 6th Ave, NYC > a block below Spring St.

OFF THE RECORD: Acts of Restorative Justice
by James Scruggs in collaboration with Thomas Giovanni is an invitation to walk an energizing path from despair to agency. When the American Criminal Justice System holds all the cards, one woman decides to question the game itself. Along the way, she enlists the audience in helping her fight against the forces of capital. The stakes are the soul of the nation itself – what choice do we have but to walk by her side?

WOOD SPOONS FOR FREEDOM!!!! ❤

Thank You for capturing this moment at the NO KINGS protest in New York City!

Wood Spoons for Freedom emerges from a desire to have an action, a dance, that can be done at protests. The dance is in the spirit of Toyi Toyi protest dances in South Africa during Apartheid and the Baila Capucha Baila dances against sexism, r**e culture, and other forms of violence inflicted on women in Chile. The movement is rooted in Maculelé a warrior dance from Brazil.

The dance is about solidarity, resilience, tapping into JOY, and resistance to oppression. All you need is two wooden spoons.

Wood Spoons for Freedom is the brainchild of Edisa Weeks and is organized by artists in Circle Up, a group facilitated by Yanira Castro, including Ariel Lembeck, Martha Sherman, Kimiko Tanabe, and Rishauna Zumberg.

Thank you to everyone who joined in ❤
