This is what Service Above Self can look like thousands of miles from Beavercreek. 💧🌎

An incredible update from a project we’re proud to be partnering on! Seeing one of the original water sources firsthand helps put into perspective both the challenges these communities face and the impact this work can have.

We’re proud to have members of Beavercreek Rotary involved in this effort and excited to continue following the progress!

If you thought we got a lot of rain last month, you were right.

During August’s heavy rainfall, the Great Miami River Watershed received 10–15 inches of rain over 30 days, and at the peak, four Miami Conservancy District dams were holding back approximately 5.8 billion gallons of water.

And that’s exactly what they were built to do.

Today the Beavercreek Rotary Club welcomed Don O'Connor from the Miami Conservancy District to share the story of the flood-protection system created after the devastating Great Flood of 1913.

More than 100 years later, the system’s five “dry dams” continue to temporarily hold back floodwater and help protect communities throughout the Miami Valley.

Don also discussed the challenges of maintaining century-old infrastructure and preparing it for the future.

It’s easy to take infrastructure for granted when it’s working exactly as intended, and last month was a great reminder of why it matters.

Thank you Don for a fascinating and very timely program!

Sometimes the best self-defense tool is simply paying attention. 👀

This week the Beavercreek Rotary Club welcomed Chris Sheffield, founder of Mugger Slugger Defense Concepts, for a conversation about personal safety, vehicle security and the importance of situational awareness.

Chris shared practical tips that can easily become everyday habits, from having your keys ready before reaching your vehicle to maintaining distance when something or someone doesn't feel right.

He also demonstrated the non-lethal self-defense products his company developed, including pepper spray devices designed with features such as long-range deployment and ultraviolet dye that can assist with suspect identification.

But one of the biggest takeaways wasn't about any particular product:

Be aware of your surroundings.
Trust when something doesn't seem right.
Think about your safety before you find yourself needing to react.

Chris also shared his entrepreneurial journey, which began after a successful presentation to a group of Realtors all the way back in 1980!

Thank you, Chris, for an interesting, informative and definitely memorable Rotary program!

🚨 Quick question: How many scam calls, texts or emails have you received just this week?

Unfortunately, they're getting harder to spot.

Our guest speaker Rene Gindelberger spent 23 years working in credit unions, and this week she gave us a crash course in protecting ourselves from identity theft and fraud.

Her advice included:

🔒 Freeze your credit
📊 Check your credit reports regularly
📲 Turn on multi-factor authentication
🚫 Don't click unexpected links in texts or pop-ups
💻 Keep antivirus protection updated
🛑 Slow down when someone creates a sense of urgency

And remember: a legitimate financial institution isn't going to tell you to transfer your money to a Bitcoin machine.

From grandparent scams to fake prizes and charities, Renee reminded us that education is one of our best defenses, and encouraged us to share these tips with the people in our lives.

So we're doing exactly that!

What's the most convincing scam attempt you've received lately? Drop it in the comments. Your example might help someone else recognize it when it happens to them.

📚21,000 books and counting! 📚

The Beavercreek Rotary Club welcomed Rachel Bane, Speaker & Author , and founder of the Sunshine Book Club, to share how an idea that began in 2020 has grown into a mission centered around children, literacy and connection.

What evolved from a face-painting business became a nonprofit helping provide books to children living in poverty or foster care, and today, the Sunshine Book Club has distributed approximately 21,000 books!

Rachel also shared stories from her recent mission trip to El Salvador, where she was able to distribute Spanish translations of her children's books, as well as the partnerships she's built closer to home with organizations including Shoes 4 the Shoeless and local food banks.

One of our favorite parts of Rotary is getting to meet people who saw a need and decided to do something about it. Rachel's story was a great example of just how far that decision can go.

Thank you, Rachel, for sharing your story and your passion for helping kids discover the power of books! 📖❤️

We are excited for Rachel Bane, Speaker & Author to make her return this Friday!

I'm looking forward to speaking at the Beavercreek Rotary Club sharing the mission behind Sunshine Book Club.

I'll also be sharing a little about my author journey. When we say "yes" to the dreams on our hearts, we often have no idea they will lead.

Thank you, Beavercreek Rotary Club, for the opportunity to share my story. I'm excited for the conversation and look forward to connecting with everyone!
