Monday, June 15: This has been one busy and fun day at the Depot. We had two youth work groups visit. The first group hailed from Lewisburg UMC while the second group were youth from Praying Pelicans Ministry. The day was a bit hectic but these young folks accomplished a lot! Let's see:

They audited, learned how to stretch-wrap a loaded pallet, and warehoused 188 palletized flood buckets
Cleaned and organized the Depot tool room
Cleaned and organized the WVVIM (Volunteers in Mission) trailer
Loaded scaffolding to be used for repairing a house in Beckley
Both groups each offered prayers of thanksgiving and hope for how these resources will be used to alleviate suffering in times of disaster.

The message from the Depot today is: don't lose hope and faith in our young folks — they are standing up and being counted for the Kindom!!

Packing the UMCOR cleaning, feminine hygiene, and personal hygiene kits is one thing. What happens next is even better! We are fortunate to be able to place all kits produced at Annual Conference:

The buckets are already in place in a storage facility near Fairmont, WV. Buckets are prepositioned for when they are needed. In fact, the 122 Annual Conference buckets are more than replacing 90 buckets distributed in Glenville and Philippi in response to earlier flash flooding.

The feminine and personal hygiene kits are donated to UM mission, Upshur Parish House, for distribution on an as needed basis.

Yes, it is good and necessary to have products warehoused at the New Vision Depot for distribution. Disasters are unpredictable and readiness is important. It is also good to see these products distributed in the field ready for immediate use. If you are in ministry in the WVUMC and in need of personal hygiene or feminine hygiene kits, please DM the New Vision Depot.

Wednesday — 2026 Annual Conference begins — this year, with hands-on service opportunities. Plenty of folks attended the 3 Disaster Response service sessions. The folks built 122 UMCOR - United Methodist Committee On Relief Cleaning buckets, 120 feminine hygiene kits, and 120 personal hygiene kits!! It was a great experience and kept “us workers” scrambling. What an amazing assembly line. Thank you, Lord!

Saturday — the Depot was blessed today! Young men from Hope In the Mountains arrived to tour the Depot and lend their hands for work. These young men loaded UMCOR - United Methodist Committee On Relief kit products heading to Annual Conference next week. They also moved and stretch-wrapped spare buckets, spread gravel for a driveway, and washed the truck. We are grateful for their youthful presence and willingness to help. We hope they too enjoyed their Depot visit! 🙏🏼👍🏼

A busy Depot Day:
~ delivered 4 boxes of baby crib sheets to Helpful Harvest Food Bank
~ dropped the dump trailer off at Tri-County Trailers for repair and some tlc.
~ Celebration!! Almost all products are boxed ready to load for transport to Annual Conference — Lynn saw to this chore…
~ packed and palletized cots and added them to long-term storage.
~ palletized the remainder of shower bases in the warehouse for storage elsewhere (anyplace but the warehouse!! 🙄)

15 May, Friday — Safety is primary for WVUMC Disaster Response Ministries. In disaster response, we often are called upon to move heavy relief materials quickly. Palletized disaster relief resources can be heavy and bulky. So, today, Beckley-Raleigh County Emergency Services personnel and Depot folk received their Forklift Safety Authorization Training. The training included "hands on" with a forklift including pre-operation equipment check, forklift familiarization, and moving a 1,500 lb. bale of shredded paper.

The Depot extends great appreciation to Mr. Gary Hartsog and Alpha Business Center, Beckley, for providing the classroom and warehouse equipment. Mr. Mike Bailey, a long-time industrial safety officer (middle), offered excellent instruction. Pictured in the group from left to right are, Raleigh Co. 911 Director, John Zilinski, and technician David Hicks. Bernard "BB" Bailey, Scott Mayberry, Rev Don Stilgenbauer, and Randy Curtis complete the group as "regular" Depot workers and are all UMCOR - United Methodist Committee On Relief trained ERTs.

Wednesday — before going to the field, cots are thoroughly washed and dried. Hard-working folks from Beckley Community UMC came to the Depot for the washing as well as packing up items that will soon be used for the "Learning and Service" opportunities on the first day of Annual Conference in Buckhannon, WV. Earlier, the Depot offered white 60” shower bases to the ministries and churches of the WVUMC. These shower bases remain available. If your church, ministry, parsonage, or other facility plan to upgrade, you might want to include one or more of these units. For example, if your church is considering designation as a community shelter during a disaster (we believe all churches should consider this designation) you are welcome to one or more of these new-in-the-box units at no charge.

Friday, May 08 — the Depot participated in a new idea — collaborating with the Lay Servant Academy of the Southern District WVUMC, eight folks cross-registered for a 10-hour Advanced Lay Academy Class (Compassionate Disaster Response). With a 2-hour class at the Depot on how to properly audit an UMCOR Cleaning Kit and how to be a “caring Christian presence” with victims of natural disasters along with 8-hour of instruction to become a certified UMCOR, United Methodist Committee on Relief, ERT (Early Response Team) member, registrants also received credit for a 10-hour Advanced Lay Academy Course. (Apologies for not showing more photos, but we were plenty busy for two hours 😊)
