STARBASE Louisiana is a STEM education program sponsored through the 307th Bomb Wing of the Air Force Reserve Command at Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana.

STARBASE Louisiana...
• Is one of over 80 Department of Defense STARBASE education sites in the country.
• Utilizes 25 hours of hands-on instruction in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) to promote goal setting, teamwork, problem solving and collaboration in a real world setting.
• Correlates STARBASE curricula with national and state objectives.
• Targets 5th grade classes in Bossier and Caddo Parishes and continues the STEM pipeline by going to local schools in 6th through 12th grades.
• Has a certified teaching staff that works with each class and their homeroom teacher in its 5-day academies.
• Models hands-on teaching methods, innovative brain-based instructional strategies, and provides guided reinforcement activities for classroom teachers.
• Provides teacher training through workshops and field experiences.

Building Skills. Creating Opportunities. Investing in the Future!

STARBASE Louisiana Advanced Programs partnered with BPCC’s Center for Advanced Manufacturing, Engineering, and Technology (CAMET) and Haughton High School’s JROTC program to give seniors a valuable workforce development opportunity!

Students spent the day building workplace safety skills while working toward their OSHA Safety Standards Certification! 👷‍♂️👏

1st rocket launch of the season was a huge success! These young engineers are testing their first prototypes and planning design changes for their ARC competition in the spring.

A big thanks to the Haughton Fire Dept. for having a truck onsite so we could launch during the burn ban.

🐟 Things are getting FISHY at STARBASE Louisiana!

Yesterday, our Middle School Military Dependents group welcomed some new residents to their aquaponics system! Our young STEM scientists are diving into the world of aquaponics, exploring how fish, plants, and science work together!

When most people think about America's space program, they picture Florida or Houston.

But some of the hardware that has carried America toward the Moon was built right here in Louisiana.

NASA's Michoud Assembly Facility sits in eastern New Orleans.

NASA calls it “America's Rocket Factory.”

And that isn't just a catchy nickname.

Michoud covers 829 acres, and its main manufacturing building contains approximately 43 acres under one roof — enough space, NASA says, to fit more than 31 professional football fields.

NASA acquired the facility in 1961.

During the Apollo era, Michoud workers built first stages for the Saturn I and Saturn V rockets. Later, the facility manufactured the enormous external fuel tanks used by the Space Shuttle program.

And Louisiana's space connection isn't just history.

Michoud continues working on NASA's Artemis program, including Space Launch System rocket hardware and components for the Orion spacecraft.

In April 2026, NASA rolled the Artemis III SLS core stage out of Michoud for shipment aboard the agency's Pegasus barge.

Think about that for a second.

Behind the levees and waterways of New Orleans East, Louisiana workers have helped build hardware for Apollo, the Space Shuttle and Artemis.

There's even a Louisiana connection hiding outside the modern factory.

Before NASA, part of this land belonged to Antoine Michoud, who operated a sugar plantation and refinery there during the nineteenth century. NASA says two brick smokestacks from the old refinery still survive near the facility today.

From sugar cane...

to Saturn V...

to spacecraft headed toward the Moon.

Few pieces of Louisiana ground have witnessed a transformation quite like Michoud.

🌱🐟 INTRODUCING PROJECT HYDROHARVEST! 💧🌿

Something NEW has been growing at STARBASE Louisiana!

Thanks to a generous grant from AEP, we’ve been hard at work building Project HydroHarvest—a sustainable greenhouse and aquaponics system that will serve as a living, hands-on STEM laboratory for our students.

This year, our Middle School Military Dependents Program will take on HydroHarvest! Students will help maintain, monitor, and improve the system while using science, engineering, technology, and data to tackle real-world challenges.

🚀 Louisiana’s Future Is Taking Off! 🚀

There has been some understandable confusion following SpaceX’s recent announcement about plans to build a new launch facility in Louisiana and its use of the name “Starbase Louisiana.”

For those of us in northwest Louisiana, the name STARBASE Louisiana has a long history of its own. The Department of Defense STARBASE Louisiana program at Barksdale Air Force Base has been inspiring students in STEM and launching student rockets long before SpaceX was founded.

For more than 27 years, our program has introduced over 45,000 of Louisiana students to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, helping them discover the possibilities of careers in aerospace and beyond. In fact, one of our former national rocketry competition finalists now works for SpaceX—proof that the students we inspire today really can become the engineers and innovators shaping tomorrow. 🚀

We are excited about SpaceX’s investment in Louisiana and what it could mean for our state’s future. More aerospace opportunities mean more possibilities for Louisiana students, educators, and communities.

At the same time, we hope there will be opportunities to help prevent confusion between the two organizations that now share such similar names. Most importantly, we hope we can work together toward a common goal: educating, inspiring, and empowering the next generation to build an even brighter future for Louisiana.

There is plenty of room in Louisiana’s future for rockets, innovation, and STEM education—and we’re excited to see where it takes us!

STARBASE Louisiana currently has TWO High School Rocketry programs open for registration! 🎉

Students work together to design, build, test, and launch their own rockets as they prepare to compete in the American Rocketry Challenge (ARC)—the nation’s largest student rocketry competition.

And this isn’t just about launching rockets! Students gain hands-on experience with:
