This Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re celebrating the people, stories, cultures, and businesses that help make Avondale Estates such a vibrant community.❤️ We’re highlighting a few Hispanic-owned businesses right here in Avondale and giving their owners the chance to share a little about their heritage, entrepreneurial journeys, and what being part of our community means to them. Meet Lis Hernandez.

I’m originally from Caracas, Venezuela, and I started Arepa Mía in 2011 with a simple idea: to share the food I grew up eating and the Venezuela I love. Food has always meant family, memories, and bringing people together. That is still at the heart of how I run Arepa Mía today. I want people to walk in, feel welcome, eat something made with love, and experience a little piece of my country. Being part of Avondale Estates has made that even more special. This community has embraced us, supported us, and truly made Arepa Mía feel at home.

I am a Peruvian American raised in Trujillo, where visits to the market with my grandmother taught me that food carries family, memory, and culture. That foundation inspired my path from Sweet Devil Moon to Calle Latina and Santo Cantina & Cocina.

At Santo, our Latino team members bring cooking traditions from their own homes and communities to the dishes we create. Their knowledge and care are why dining with us feels like sharing Mexican home cooking. I am grateful to be part of Avondale Estates, a community that values local businesses, genuine hospitality, and gathering around the table.
