Otis was born on January 1, 2016, and was surrendered to Suncoast Basset Rescue in February 2025 when his family faced illness and could no longer be home to care for him. Wanting the very best for him, they made the loving decision to place him in our care.

During his over a year and a half with SBR, Otis lived with Blane & Jennifer Stutes. Although Otis was initially supposed to be a foster, he quickly made it clear that he'd found his pack and his people and wasn't going anywhere.

Otis was truly the perfect gentleman with a wonderfully sweet personality. He also had a feisty side, enjoying a little counter surfing and unauthorized excursions through the neighborhood! He truly loved his canine and human pack and they, in turn, loved him.

In September, a burst hematoma necessitated emergency surgery. Although he seemed to recover, his health continued to decline and on October 25, 2026, we said goodbye. We cannot thank Blane & Jennifer enough for embracing Otis with all his quirks and surrounding him with joy and understanding.

He left as he lived, enveloped in love. Fly free, sweet Otis.

ADOPTION ANNOUNCEMENT📣🐾

Daisy & Poppy are blooming! 🌼🌺

We’re overjoyed to announce that bonded best friends Daisy and Poppy (who joined SBR looking for a fresh start) have found their forever home with Roger, Elizabeth, and daughter Annabelle.

Elizabeth shared: “We find ourselves just staring at them with huge smiles on our faces. We’ve decided to rename Tiana… she’s going to be Poppy now. Our little flower girls.”💐

These two are inseparable companions who love playing together, napping together and getting into zoomie races around the house.

Congratulations to the whole crew—Daisy & Poppy are officially blooming in their forever home! ❤🐾

Ellie Mae was a dog out of options. Approximately 9 years old, she landed at Hillsborough Pet Resource Center in Tampa after her owner died and family members were unwilling to care for her. HPRC reached out to SBR, recognizing that a shelter was no place for an elderly dog facing multiple medical challenges.

Her workup was grim: a large tumor along her mammary chain, spinal calcification, and lameness in one rear leg. Despite all of this, Ellie Mae’s spirit remained sweet. She rested quietly, waiting and hoping for someone to help. SBR said yes, of course. She came to SBR on September 1, 2026.

One of our wonderful volunteers, Leslie Kalin, headed to the shelter to pick Ellie Mae up and bring her home. For one and a half months, Ellie Mae had what every dog deserves—a peaceful place to rest, companionship, tasty food, and plenty of love. Sadly, on October 22, 2026, we had to let her go.

And Leslie’s words say it all:

“My heart is full and broken at the same time. She may be one of the sweetest dogs that I have ever had the pleasure of having in my life ever.”

We cannot thank Leslie enough for the love and care she gave Ellie Mae. Her dedication is a beautiful testament to the power of a loving home—and to the difference one person can make in a dog’s life. Sometimes rescue isn’t about changing the outcome. It’s about making sure a dog never has to face it alone.

🐾 WELCOME TO SBR, BO! 🐾

Bo is a 3½-year-old hound who needed a fresh start. His owners loved him, but he had developed an unfortunate dislike for some of the other dogs in the household. Trying to keep the peace had become an overwhelming logistical challenge, so SBR was happy to help Bo find his next chapter.

Bo had quite a journey to get to his foster home, and we’re so grateful to all the volunteers who made it happen! Thank you to Kirsten for handling the pickup and getting Bo started on his journey. Joe & Connie drove a long middle leg, passing him along to Amanda & John, who then handed him off to Caroline & Zade . Caroline & Zade drove the final leg and welcomed Bo into their home as his foster family.

We know Bo is great with people, including kids, and gets along with some dogs—but definitely not all. He has a bit of medical updating in his future, and for now, he’s settling into a dog-free home where he can relax. Fortunately, Bo is the ultimate couch potato, so he seems more than ready for the assignment!

Sometimes, even when there’s love in a home, the best solution is to find a better fit. Now Bo has the opportunity to settle in, let us get to know him, and discover what kind of home will help him thrive.

🐾WELCOME BONNIE! 🐾

Bonnie is a lovely 4-year-old tricolor girl whose life has been a little chaotic lately. She was rehomed about three months ago, and when damage caused by Hurricane Isaias changed her circumstances once again, Bonnie found herself needing a new home.

Thankfully, she had some friends ready to help! Working together with our partners at Tri-State Basset Hound Rescue, we moved quickly to bring Bonnie into rescue and get her settled into foster care. Thank you to Angie who was able to take Bonnie in on very short notice late Thursday evening. And many thanks to Keith & Maribel who picked Bonnie up yesterday and are fostering her.

Through all these changes, Bonnie seems to be taking everything in stride. New place? New people? No problem! This adaptable girl is rolling with the punches and making the best of whatever comes her way.

Bonnie is good with dogs, cats, and kids—but no chickens, please! She’s already spayed and appears to be in good health. We’ll get her in for a wellness check soon to make sure everything is looking good.

After so much uncertainty, Bonnie deserves a little stability, a lot of love, and a family who will help her settle in for good. We’re happy to be part of her journey toward that brighter chapter!

❤️ WELCOME ABBY & DAISY! ❤️

Abby (7) and Daisy (10) are a sweet, bonded pair who came to SBR when their family’s circumstances changed, and time and finances made it difficult to continue caring for them. Wanting the very best for these girls in their golden years, their owner reached out to SBR to help give them the next chapter they deserve.

Daisy is the laid-back leader of the pack, while Abby is a little more shy. Many thanks to Bob & Sheilah for transporting the girls and opening their home to them temporarily while they settle in.

Abby gave everyone a bit of a scare when she decided to try some free-range roaming! Thankfully, she never strayed far from Daisy. These days, you can find the two of them either resting their heads on Bob’s foot or snoozing comfortably on the couch. Sounds like they’re already figuring out the finer points of the good life!

For now, these two girls are safe, together, and surrounded by people who care. As the saying goes, “There’s no place like home,” and we’re delighted that Abby & Daisy have found theirs with SBR.

When this handsome 6-year-old Basset Hound/Lab mix arrived at SBR, his skin was a mess, and he’d lost a lot of his fur. With medical care and several devoted foster families in his corner, Anchor has made some serious progress. Now, he’s feeling great, and he’s ready for his next big transformation: finding his forever family!

Anchor’s fall rebrand plan includes:

🏃 A securely fenced yard for daily cardio (also known as the Basset 500)

🐶 At least one canine friend to keep him active and entertained

🥰 Humans who appreciate the importance of recovery days—preferably on the couch, with plenty of cuddles

📺 Binge-watching TV after a hard day of chasing, playing, and generally being adorable

🚫 Absolutely. No. Cats. Anchor knows his boundaries, and we respect them.

Anchor is sweet, affectionate, easygoing, great with other dogs, potty trained, and happy just being part of whatever his people are doing. He’s put in the work, had his glow-up, and is ready to take on this next chapter with a family of his own.
