Every month, we hear stories from our community of how a loved one experienced a stroke and the signs that were noticed — and some that went unnoticed. Many have described a family member who could not move their arm, another who could not stand, a grandparent with confused speech, and possibly a very slight droop in a loved one's mouth. So slight it was almost easy to miss. But they didn't miss it. They called 911, and they got them to the hospital in time. That moment of recognition made all the difference.

This is exactly why sharing this information matters so much. Not just learning it yourself, but passing it on to your loved ones. Because the people most likely to be with you if something happens are the people who love you most. And you want them to know what to look for.

B.E. F.A.S.T. — Know the Signs of a Stroke

B — Balance — sudden loss of balance or coordination
E — Eyes — sudden changes in vision
F — Face — drooping on one side, even if subtle
A — Arms — weakness or numbness in one arm
S — Speech — slurred or confusing speech
T — Time — time to call 911 right now

Don't wait to see if it gets better. Don't talk yourself out of it. Time is brain — every minute that passes matters. Call 911. If the person loses consciousness and stops breathing, start CPR. But step one is always recognizing the signs and making that call.

The more people who know B.E. F.A.S.T., the more who can be helped.

High blood pressure is one of the biggest risk factors for stroke — and it's one we can actually do something about. According to the American Heart Association, a normal blood pressure reading is less than 120/80 mm Hg. Once you start creeping above that — especially if you're consistently at 130/80 or higher — that's when your risk starts to climb.

If your doctor has discussed your high blood pressure, please follow their advice. If they've recommended medication, take it. It's easy to feel fine and think you don't need it — but high blood pressure is sneaky. You often feel nothing until something happens. Consistently managing it is one of the most powerful ways to protect yourself.

Get it checked if you haven't in a while. Know your numbers. If anything seems off, please follow up with your doctor.

This month, share B.E. F.A.S.T. with someone you love. Put it in a text. Mention it at dinner. You never know whose life it might save — and it very well could be someone in your own family.

Healthy love,

Your Healthy Lifestyles Committee
