Workforce development is one of those phrases that sounds like it should come with a binder. To be fair, sometimes it does. 😂

In real life, though, it looks a lot more practical: helping someone explore careers, build skills, train for something new, gain work experience, prepare for a job search, or get past something standing in the way. It also means helping local employers find and develop the workers they need.

A lot happens between “I need a job” and “You’re hired." We are here for you!

With a new school year about to begin, we’re thinking about the students we’ve worked with over the years and where life has taken them.

CNAs, teachers, police officers, nurses, welders, engineers, cashiers, business owners, and so many others. We love hearing from people who got their first work experience through CEP or found an interest through a high school program that eventually became a career. Whether it was five years ago or a few decades ago, those stories still make our day!

Some of those former participants even now welcome our youth participants into their own businesses for work experiences and job shadows. That’s a pretty special full-circle moment.

For our staff, this work means getting to know a student, helping them explore an interest, finding a place for them to get experience, and working through whatever might be standing in their way. CEP has a long history of doing that alongside our local schools and employers, and we’re proud to keep that work going.

To the students who already know what they want to do and those still figuring it out, we’re wishing you a great school year. You don’t have to have your whole future planned to get started!

This summer, CEP was fortunate to welcome Lauren as a Northwest Wisconsin AHEC intern through the CHIP program!

Throughout her internship, Lauren played a key role in preparing for our Rescue Divas EMS Camp. She spent one day each week in our Ashland office, with the rest of her time working remotely to help bring camp plans to life. In addition, she conducted valuable research to support future grant writing efforts, helping CEP secure resources to sustain the program for years to come.

Although her internship officially ended just before camp began, we were thrilled that Lauren was able to join us for three days at Rescue Divas to see all of her hard work come together. Her dedication and enthusiasm made a real difference, and we are so grateful for everything she contributed this summer.

Thank you, Lauren, and thank you to Northwest Wisconsin AHEC for making this partnership possible. We wish Lauren all the best in her future endeavors!

Finding and keeping workers continues to be a challenge for many employers across Northwest Wisconsin, and there really isn’t one simple reason why.

Skyler, our executive director, recently talked with the Sawyer County Record about some of what we are seeing and hearing across our ten-county region, including an aging workforce, the challenge of keeping younger people in rural communities, and the different ways apprenticeships, training, and other career pathways can help.

We also see the other side of this every day through the people we work with. Some are looking for their first job, some are starting over, some want to go back to school or complete training, and others just need a little help figuring out what comes next. Part of our job is helping make those connections between people, opportunities, and employers across the region.

Thanks to the Sawyer County Record for reaching out and giving us the opportunity to share some of what we are seeing here in Northwest Wisconsin.
