North Carolina is home to the largest collection of waterfowl in North America, thanks to a unique conservation partnership!

The North Carolina Zoo Society is a key sponsor of Sylvan Heights Bird Park in Scotland Neck, North Carolina. Under the guidance of world-renowned rare-bird expert Mike Lubbock, this incredible facility acts as a leading conservator and breeder for endangered waterfowl, housing 161 different species of ducks, geese, swans, cranes, and parrots.

Because of its critical work in avian preservation, Sylvan Heights draws researchers, veterinarians, and bird enthusiasts from all over the globe to study advanced breeding techniques.

🦁 Open wide? Not quite. 🐍

The North Carolina Zoo is home to more animals than ever. But our portable endoscopes and ultrasound machines are nearly 20 years old.

For a sick lion or cobra, staying close to their habitat reduces stress. That means vets must bring the equipment to them—not the other way around.

Aging, portable diagnostic tools put enormous strain on our veterinary team. New portable endoscopes and ultrasounds would provide clearer images, detect cancers earlier, and save lives.

Help us purchase this life-saving equipment. Every donation counts (minimum $10 online).

Planning a summer trip to the North Carolina Zoo? ☀️🦒 With 500 acres of natural habitats to explore, a little preparation goes a long way toward having an incredible day.

Here are a few quick tips to help you stay cool and comfortable during your warm-weather visit:

• Start early: Animals are often most active and visible during the cooler morning hours.
• Stay hydrated: You can bring your own reusable containers to refill at hydration stations throughout the park.
• Take your time: Wear comfortable walking shoes and pace yourself. Look for shaded viewing areas and air-conditioned indoor spaces like the Akiba Market or the Akiba Theater to take a break.
• Utilize the tram: Take advantage of our internal transportation system to rest your feet between continents.

Conservation rests at the heart of the North Carolina Zoo’s missions and management. At home, the Zoo minimizes the waste it produces and the resources it consumes. Around the world, the Zoo puts staff into the field to help lead, establish, and manage anti-poaching programs and to conduct research that helps local people protect wildlife and nature. These good works depend almost entirely on donations from private individuals, foundations, corporations, and government agencies.

Did you know your NC Zoo Society membership works at other zoos and aquariums across North America?

Through a voluntary reciprocal admission program managed by the AZA, members get free or discounted entry to partner institutions from California to Canada. That includes Zoo Atlanta, the Cincinnati Zoo, the Toronto Zoo, and more than 150 other locations.

A few important things to know before you go:

⏺️ Most institutions admit only the two adults named on your membership card plus two children (no extra guests).

⏺️ Corporate Members receive reciprocal benefits only at Sylvan Heights Bird Park.

⏺️ Zoos can withdraw from the program at any time, so always call ahead to confirm.
