Learning sticks when kids get the chance to explore, create, and discover hands-on. Thanks to partnerships between Randolph County 4-H and the Archdale Public Library Branch, local homeschool students are getting opportunities to dive into agriculture, science, and STEM activities in engaging, meaningful ways.

Programs like these help students build confidence, connect with peers, and discover new interests, all while having fun learning. Support from United Way of Randolph County helps make these opportunities possible for more than 9,500 local students each year.

When we talk about ALICE, it can sound like a lot of charts and percentages. But behind every number is a neighbor with a real story. That 35% of ALICE households includes parents staying up late to balance a tight budget, grandparents helping raise grandkids, and young adults working hard just to stand on their own two feet.

Because people give and volunteer, those stories don’t end with struggle. They can include new jobs, more stable housing, kids who are ready for school, and families who feel supported instead of alone.

So as you see the new ALICE report, remember this: we’re not just counting households. We’re talking about friends, coworkers, and families we care about, and together, we can help write a different next chapter for them.

Numbers on a chart only matter if they change what we do next.

The new ALICE report helps us see where needs are growing in Randolph County and which families are under the most pressure. We use this data to guide our work around financial security, from supporting quality childcare and job training to helping connect people with resources when money is tight.

It also helps us be better stewards of local dollars. When we know exactly where the gaps are, we can invest in programs and partnerships that meet those needs head-on.

You may hear us talk about ALICE a lot, but what does it actually mean?

ALICE stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. These are families who earn more than the federal poverty level, but still not enough to afford the basics where they live.

They are often the people we see every day: childcare workers, home health aides, retail staff, service workers, and many others. They are working hard, sometimes more than one job, yet the math still doesn’t work. Rent, food, gas, childcare, health care, when all of that adds up, there’s nothing left for savings. One emergency can put everything at risk.

This is why the ALICE report matters. It gives us a clearer picture of who is struggling and what it really takes for families in Randolph County to be stable.

We want to share with you a story of impact.

A local Scout named Braxton set out to earn the rank of Eagle Scout, which only a small number of Scouts ever achieve. For his Eagle project, he led a team to repair damaged concrete and improve a well-used space in our community, making it safer and more welcoming for everyone who passes through.

It took planning, fundraising, supplies, and a lot of willing hands with shovels and work gloves. But it also took something you don’t always see in the photos: a network of partners, donors, and volunteers who believe in young leaders and want to give them room to grow.

Because people here in Randolph County give and volunteer, projects like Braxton’s don’t just stay as ideas on paper. They turn into new steps poured, new paths fixed, and new pride in the place we all share.

Our Community Impact volunteers don’t stand on a stage or cut a ribbon. They sit with stacks of applications, read the details, ask hard questions, and talk through what will help Randolph County the most.

Their recommendations help guide how our Impact Grants are invested in education, financial stability, health, and more here at home. The board makes the final call, but our volunteers help shape the path.
