Do you or someone you know like to go fishing?🐟

The NC Zoo WRC is currently rehabbing EIGHT North American river otters. These babies will eat 8+ pounds of fish daily. That's a lot of fish to keep up with!

If you are planning a fishing trip soon we would love to get any fish or shellfish you have left over!
If this does apply to you please reach out to the center by calling at (336)879-7644, emailing at [email protected], or messaging us here to set up a drop off time!

Qualifications: FRESH frozen fish or shellfish, no hooks please! If the hook does get swallowed please remove before donation. No filleted fish, these will be given out whole. :)

Edited:The response to this request has been overwhelming(in the best way!), we have already received over 50lbs of fish! We would like to narrow our request down to smaller sized fish (12 inches or less) and crayfish. We greatly appreciate everyone's willingness to help keep these otters well fed and enriched this summer. If fishing is not your forte, then stay tuned for an upcoming post on other ways to give.
We would also like to mention that these otters are rehab patients. They are growing and learning to prepare for life back in the wild behind the scenes with limited interaction with humans.

Did you know..
The staff at the wildlife center wear many hats!
A few of our tasks include feeding infants (as often as every 30 minutes!), maintaining medical care for injured animals, caring for our outdoor pre-release animals, training new volunteers and interns, and making appointments.

Our current caseload is over 70 patients, so we ask that you please be patient and understanding as we try to prioritize top standards of care while also attempting to answer phone calls and do call backs.
We also ask that if you do set up an appointment to please arrive no more than 15 minutes early or late as to not overlap with other appointments.

At the wildlife center we are extremely grateful for our volunteers and all that they do.
Every little task from nursery feedings, to everyday husbandry, to maintaining our facilities helps keep the center running smooth.
"We are honored to have you on our team. Thank you for your hard work."

Thanks to the weather warming up, we were able to release a majority of our reptile patients from last year!

Reminder that this time of year reptiles will be out and about, sometimes crossing roads or wandering through your yard. Please be mindful of them while driving, mowing or doing yardwork. If you have to move an animal, move it in the same direction it is going and ensure the safety of the animals and yourself.

"Volunteers don't get paid, not because they're worthless, but because they're priceless!"

We are kicking off Volunteer Appreciation week today and just want to say we would not be able to do it without the help of our volunteers. We thank each and everyone of you!

Reminder that it is nesting season!
This time of year many birds are making nests and hatching eggs, and it feels like a good time to remind everyone that it is illegal to destroy, posses, or move an active bird nest.
If you do find yourself upset about a bird nest in an unwanted area rest assured knowing they'll be gone in a few weeks. In the meantime it's always good to appreciate the small things (birds) in life. 😉

Working at a wildlife center means there is a lot of germs, parasites, diseases and more that comes throughout the center.
Here are some precautions we take to ensure our staff/volunteers as well as patients do not get ill:
-DISINFECT! Every surface that is touched by an animal will be quickly disinfected using our strict disinfectant protocols. This means that enclosures and weigh boxes are disinfected between animals, as well as all surfaces they come into contact with.
-Change all linens and gloves between animals.
-Sweep and mop: All floors are swept and mopped DAILY
-If someone has contaminated gloves on, they are not to open doors, folders, etc. Someone else should do it for them.
-New patients go into an enclosure alone for a few days to determine their health status before being added into an enclosure with others of the same species.
-Footbaths: we have footbaths at all doors that exit the building and in front of our animal wards that contain bleach.
-All animal laundry is bleached to disinfect the items between uses.
-Wooden enrichment is not considered "multi-use" after one use it will be disposed of since it is not able to be properly disinfected.
-Masks are worn with multiple high-risk species to ensure staff and patients are safe.
