In 2010, Marine Sergeant Colin Faust stepped on a pressure-plate improvised explosive device (IED) after a firefight with Taliban forces in Afghanistan.

The explosion left him catastrophically wounded, resulting in an above-the-knee amputation of his left leg, devastating injuries to his right leg, a broken pelvis, extensive shrapnel wounds, a concussion, a ruptured eardrum, and multiple broken bones.

Despite the severity of his injuries, Colin remained conscious throughout a harrowing evacuation. Fellow Marines and Navy Corpsmen applied five tourniquets to stop life-threatening blood loss before carrying him nearly 1,000 meters across terrain still littered with explosives.

As Colin fought for his life at the National Naval Medical Center, Semper Fi & America’s Fund was there, providing immediate support to his family and beginning a relationship that continues more than a decade later.

Throughout every stage of his recovery, The Fund has helped Colin and his family. From accessible transportation and adaptive vehicle modifications to a wheelchair-accessible home, caregiver retreats for his wife, Julia, and mother, Sonja, and much more.

Today, Colin and Julia are raising their four children while building a life rooted in faith, family, and service. After spending five years as a teacher, Colin founded Crown of Thorns Academy, an all-boys elementary school dedicated to teaching, forming, and mentoring young men. Through his work, he continues to help the next generation discover purpose, resilience, and hope.

The Fund’s Back-to-School events have been happening across the country the last few weeks! 🎒

In San Antonio, service members and their families recently enjoyed a fun night out at a San Antonio Missions minor league baseball game with a classic ballpark dinner packed with hot dogs, burgers, cookies, and more.

On National Purple Heart Day, we honor those who carry the physical and invisible wounds of war.

Those like Marine Sergeant Henry Maldonado who sustained severe burns, a traumatic brain injury, and lasting damage to his left side, including hearing loss in a su***de bomber attack in 2004.

Join Semper Fi & America’s Fund in thanking the men and women who wear the Purple Heart.

On July 25, 2012, seventeen years into Master Sgt. Cedric King’s service to our country, he was severely wounded in an IED explosion during his third deployment.

The blast caused internal injuries, permanent damage to his right arm, and the amputation of both of his legs. Cedric was medevaced to safety and put into a medically induced coma to heal.

But upon waking, he learned he would never be alone on his journey to healing.

The Fund first provided help at Cedric’s hospital bedside, offsetting the cost of his wife’s loss of income to allow them to remain together during the most difficult moments of their lives. When he returned home as an amputee, The Fund continued to deliver vital support, including grants for travel, an adaptive vehicle, and home remodels to make sure Cedric received necessary medical help and ensure he had a safe, comfortable, and accessible place to call home, all of which has proved life-changing in more ways than Cedric could imagine.

Cedric is now the recipient of the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, and the Order of Saint Maurice, the Patron Saint of the Infantry, and is a passionate advocate for the injured veteran community and military families.

“The Fund was instrumental in us getting back to our feet as a family. They helped our family get back to a better place in life…not just with money but with meaningfulness,” he said. “It’s been 14 years [since the IED explosion] … You are still in our lives asking, ‘How can I help?’ That is the true mark of a friend, saying non-profit is not enough. You are truly our family. What you all do is different. Everyone should be behind you all.”

In 2019, U.S. Army Major Jon Turnbull survived a su***de bombing in Syria, losing his vision, and sustaining life-altering injuries.

Last month, he competed at the 2026 Warrior Games.

The 2026 Warrior Games brought together nearly 200 wounded, ill, and injured service members and veterans from the Army, Marine Corps, Navy/Coast Guard, Air Force/Space Force, and Special Operations Command to compete across multiple adaptive sporting events.

Semper Fi & America’s Fund is incredibly proud to have stood by Jon from his initial injury through this latest challenge 💪🇺🇸
