🚒 Fire Drill Training at UTA! 🔥🦆

On Feb. 11 & 12, our Fire & Life Safety team partnered with UTA Housing and Apartments for hands‑on Fire Drill Training. Residents learned what to do during an alarm, how to evacuate safely, and why quick response matters.

And yes… the famous Fire Ducks made an appearance! 🦆🔥
A few lucky participants took one home as a fun reminder to stay prepared and stay safe.

Thank you to everyone who came out, asked great questions, and helped make our campus a safer place to live. 💙

🚨 Safety in Action at UTA! 🧪💙🧤

On Feb. 13, Mavericks got hands‑on with lab safety at our interactive campus event! Participants tried on cryogenic PPE for handling liquid nitrogen, practiced clean glove‑removal using shaving cream (a fan favorite 👀), and checked mock hazardous‑waste tags for accuracy. ✔️

Not only did everyone learn key safety skills—they also earned some fun prizes along the way! 🎉

By pairing early outreach with strong visuals and engaging demos, UTA is helping build a confident, proactive safety culture across campus—supporting CSHEMA’s mission every step of the way.

🚨 MAVS, remember to handle your hazardous waste safely and responsibly! ♻️

Here’s what you must do to stay compliant and protect our campus community:

✔️ Use containers compatible with the waste you’re disposing of
✔️ Ensure containers are in good condition with no leaks
✔️ Keep containers closed and never overfilled
✔️ Attach a waste tag and fill it out completely (full name, quantity, and hazard type)
✔️ Store containers off the floor/counter in proper secondary containment
✔️ Keep waste in the same room it was generated

✨ Lab PPE: Quick Do’s & Don’ts ✨

DO:

👓 Wear your goggles
🧤 Use gloves when needed
🧥 Keep your lab coat on
👟 Closed‑toe shoes only
💨 Use proper ventilation

DON’T:

🚫 No open-toed shoes
🚫 Don’t skip eye protection
🚫 No loose sleeves or jewelry
🚫 Don’t eat or drink in the lab
🚫 Don’t use damaged PPE

🔥 Lab Safety Spotlight

Quick reminder: when working with lithium‑ion batteries, sodium, or magnesium, always use the correct extinguisher and follow best practices.

🔋 Lithium‑Ion: Watch for overheating or smoke. Evacuate, isolate, and use a Class ABC or clean‑agent extinguisher only if safe.

🧪 Sodium & Magnesium: Never use water or CO₂. Use a Class D extinguisher.

🧯 Extinguisher Guide:

Class ABC → general & electrical fires

Class D → reactive metals

Clean agent → electronics & battery incidents

👩‍🔬 Safety First:

Keep areas clear, store materials properly, know extinguisher locations, and report hazards.
