Andrea Dalzell, known as “The Seated Nurse,” is redefining what resilience and representation look like in healthcare. As New York’s first registered nurse who uses a wheelchair, her journey challenged every expectation placed in her path.

After facing rejection in 76 job interviews, she refused to give up on her calling. That persistence finally led her to her dream role in nursing, where she proved that skill, compassion, and determination matter far more than physical limitations.

When the pandemic hit, Andrea stepped onto the frontlines, serving patients during one of the most critical moments in modern healthcare. Her story stands as a powerful reminder that perseverance doesn’t just break barriers—it rebuilds what society once thought was impossible.

Grant was discharged from the hospital yesterday. He is home and doing great! His back is not hurting him but he's still having leg pain. Don't mind the mess I have caught something and been under the weather.

Grant decided that the hospital bed was uncomfortable and took over the fold out couch. Today they took out his wound vac but left his drain in. We hoping for little to no output in the drain to be released tomorrow which would be day #5. He moved around a lot today visiting different floors to get some exercise. He also found a portable Xbox and played dad and brother quite a bit. Pain hasn't been too bad but the spasms are taking a while to work out. Dr says the spasms are more than likely from unkinking his nerves.

I wanted to explain the surgery for you all so that you have a better understanding of what we did.
Detethering surgery (tethered cord release) is a neurosurgical procedure used to free a spinal cord that is abnormally anchored or stuck to surrounding tissues. By releasing this tension, the surgery aims to relieve pain, improve neurological function, and prevent further permanent nerve damage.
Also, Grant did have some fluid on in his syrinx that had to be drained. We had to have this procedure done before we can do his spinal fusion. Before the procedure the 'team' got together and decided this was the best approach. Depending on his healing from this will determine when we can have his spinal fusion.
Thanks to all of you who have reached out and are praying.

Grant started having a lot of pain and spasms last night so they put him back on IV meds. He's never had these spasms before so he's pretty irritable. He says his pain is a constant, just there. He slept most of the morning and afternoon. We brought his brothers up to see him but unfortunately he wasn't up to much. He still doesn't have much of an appetite. Thankful for the NBA games to help distract him a little. Please continue to pray 🙏 for healing and tolerance.

OT & PT came by today. They were very impressed with how well Grant is doing. He went for a stroll around the floor a few times then took a long break due to pain. Later dad took him to the arcade floor and played some NBA2K where Grant dominated. He's off all machines but on round the clock medication for pain. He's had a few bouts of extreme pain where meds ran out and he was uncomfortable. Besides a nap after his stroll he still hasn't slept much. Because of the meds he's not really hungry either but was able to down some ice cream while watching the NBA game. Go Spurs! Praying for some sleep. Thank you all for continued prayers and messages.
