Her initial goal was to block further permitting for gas drilling close to children. Surprising everyone, Ranjana and the small

group of parents who joined her, won their first campaign! Since then Liveable Arlington has successfully blocked several fracking permits, working with a range of partners including concerned parents, health care practitioners, social justice advocates, teachers, small businesses, religious groups and environmental experts. Today Liveable Arlington is garnering national and international attention, showing the world that opposition is possible, even in Texas. And while changing Texas's relationship with fossil fuels will not happen overnight, it is heartening to see that in 2021 about 38% of the state's electricity came from renewable sources. The deadly impacts of oil and gas extraction and consumption are global. The fossil fuel industry is destroying the liveablity of our community, and our planet, and our children's future. Only by working together will we be able to significantly accelerate the change to clean, green energy.

We are at City Council Chambers to speak in opposition to the permitting of 170 rental townhomes right next to Total's polluting DAY drill site.

The DAY site was given a drillzone permit by the council on April 21 which will allow them to drill and frack new gas wells without council approval or public notification from now on.

Living near fracking at much greater distances than 300 to 600 feet is linked to much higher risk of childhood cancers, birth defects, preterm birth, low birth weight and asthma. These proposed distance is dangerous for future residents.

👀⚠️Tonight, May 5th, the Arlington City Council votes on a development of 170 rental townhomes right next to TotalEnergies' DAY drill site. This is Zoning Case PD25-22 (1120 Debbie Lane and 8380 Glenn Day Drive)

⚠️On April 21, 2026, the council issued a drill zone permit which allows Total to add any number of gas wells to the DAY site without public input in the future.

➡️ The planned townhomes are on the same piece of land as the DAY drill site and will be right next to Total's wells. The yellow circle in the second picture represents 300 feet from the gas wells.

➡️The DAY site has a history of pollution.

➡️ Moreover, there are 13 drill sites and scores of gas wells in the area, already.

➡️Scientists have linked fracking pollution which includes volatile organic compounds like benzene, a known carcinogen, nitrogen oxides that combine to create ground-level ozone (smog), soot from diesel exhaust, hydrogen sulfide, methane, and other hazardous air pollutants to much higher rates of childhood cancers, asthma, COPD, cardiac disease, birth defects.

📣🔔Did you know there are 207 gas wells within just 2 miles of Thornton Elementary? 😱
📍 Location: E. Park Row & Carter Drive

⚠️Arlington’s District 5 is saturated with fracking sites, and our children are paying the price.

⚠️ New Drill Site: In 2025, the Arlington City Council unanimously approved the "Maverick" site—the first new drill site in 12 years—down the road from Thornton.

😷 Health: Pollution from these sites is linked to higher rates of childhood leukemia, asthma, preterm births. The risk is real.

How close is too close?
Research confirms a serious link between oil and gas wells and childhood leukemia:
2X RISK: For kids living within 3 miles of dense drilling.
3X RISK: For kids born within 1.2 miles of a well.
🚨Two major studies, one terrifying conclusion: Fracking is linked to childhood leukemia.

⚖️Unfair Burden: This neighborhood is 94% people of color and 15% children under five. They suffer the fumes while others collect the checks.

⚠️The pattern repeats in District 3.

⚠️Living near fracking isn't just an "environmental issue"—it’s a direct threat to our kids’ health.

Every day is Earth Day at Liveable Arlington. 🌎

Today, we want to celebrate our wonderful community who we have been privileged to work with. Each of you inspire us and give us hope, and resolve, to keep going.

We want to recognize some special heroes, this Earth Day.

➡️Phil Kabakoff has been speaking out, and advocating against fracking in our residential neighborhoods since 2010. He shows up at every single gas well hearing and at every Liveable event.
He is always available for media tours, and opens his home again and again for reporters who want to learn more about drilling at Total's Bruder site from his backyard. He is also featured in our film, Faces of Fracking.

When industry continues to ravage your home, and local and state officials turn a blind eye to the devastation that fracking is causing in Arlington, most people give up in despair.
Phil never has, and we admire that so much. We are honored to recognize Phil as our Community Champion for 2026 this Earth Month.

➡️We want to recognize Audrey and Adaliana Gray and Juscianni Blackeller.
These young environmental heroes bravely spoke up against the Maverick site. Audrey and Adaliana, showed up again last week to get Costco to end their relationship with Citibank, one of the largest funders of fossil fuel giants like Total on the planet.
We are so proud of them! You see them here with their mother at city council.

➡️Last but not the least, we celebrate and thank every person who has been part of our campaigns and our advocacy work through hard fought wins and heartbreaking losses.
Together we continue our work for a Liveable Arlington, a liveable planet, and a liveable future for all our children.❤️

🚨Final council votes today on Total Energies' gas wells in E. Arlington, in the heart of a residential neighborhood with hundreds of homes.

📣Make Your Voice Count on April 21
Whether you have 3 minutes to speak or just 30 seconds to sign a card, your presence is vital. Thank you!

➡️Item 8.17 - A SECOND READING and FINAL VOTE on French fracking giant Total Energies’ permit to establish a drillzone at its DAY drill site at 8380 Glenn Day Drive.

➡️Item 12.2 - Arlington City Council will hold a public hearing and vote on giving French fracking giant Total Energies’ a permit for 1 gas well. Total already has permits for 3 additional wells from the state at this site. Because of the drillzone permit they can add those wells and any future wells to the Day site without a hearing and without notifying residents.

👀Curious about how members of the city council have voted on expanding drilling in Arlington over the past few years?

➡️ We have pored through every council vote on gas wells since 2020 (and we were always there - campaigning hard to protect Arlington neighborhoods), and have compiled every single vote by drill site in a table below for you.

➡️ Some things that stand out - all the new gas wells are in E. Arlington mostly in District 5 or in adjoining District 3. And each vote is for the French energy giant, Total Energies.

➡️ Concerned about how these added gas wells affect air pollution, children's health, safety, and quality of life in the neighborhoods where fracking is expanding and in the rest of Arlington?

👀In Arlington, Texas, a majority of new gas wells permitted by the City Council since 2023, and the only new drill site permitted in more than a dozen years (Total's Maverick site behind a childcare), are located in neighborhoods that are overwhelmingly home to people of color and often have concentrated poverty.⚠️

➡️The pink circles on the map show a half mile radius around gas wells allowed since 2023.

➡️The racial makeup of each tract is explained by the index on top left. Deeper browns signify more people of color - the deepest browns are areas where often more than 90% of the residents are people of color.

➡️All new wells that were approved by a council vote, including Total's Day wells that will have a 2nd and 3rd council vote on Tuesday, April 21, are in neighborhoods that are overwhelmingly home to people of color. Please look at the second map without the race data to orient yourself.
