One volunteers Santa's Shack experience-
When I first heard about the Santa’s Shack event I was not sure exactly what my role would be. I just knew that I was going to volunteer and, hopefully, help brighten the day for someone going through a heartbreaking and often scary situation. When I got to the shelter, my role was to be at the makeup station where I could provide a little glam for women who deserve to feel special. I’ve done my own make up many times for pageants, but I have never done it on someone else. I have to admit I was a little nervous! I really wanted to make sure that the make up was perfect because everyone deserves to feel loved, beautiful, and confident.

I will never forget one woman in particular. When I was doing her makeup, she told me she had never had her makeup done by a princess before and was moved to tears about how special she felt. After I flipped the mirror around, she gave me the biggest hug and in that moment, I knew it was not about the actual “makeover” but the love that is shared when people uplift and take care of one another. I hope everyone gets the opportunity to volunteer at a Santa’s Shack event because it fills your heart was so much joy.

Victoria Auten recently joined the Hagar’s Heart team as Office & Community Engagement Manager after four meaningful years as a dedicated volunteer. In her new role, she manages the office, coordinates and facilitates Packing Parties, and leads community outreach efforts.

Before coming to Hagar’s Heart, Victoria spent more than twenty years in the legal field in office management roles, the majority of that time focused on family law and child welfare. That experience gave her a deep understanding of the challenges faced by those affected by domestic abuse and ultimately inspired her to get involved. She felt compelled to help rebuild the self-worth and self-esteem of survivors—work she now continues both behind the scenes and in direct service to the community.

During her years as a volunteer, Victoria played an integral role in delivering I See You boxes to partner agencies and participated fully in fundraising events and every program Hagar’s Heart offers. Her favorite is Santa’s Shack. She describes it this way:

“I enjoy getting to spend one-on-one time with children shopping for gifts for their mom for Christmas. It’s a fulfilling experience. Seeing them get excited about choosing gifts for their mom is only the start of it for me. More often than not, the kids want to wrap the gifts themselves, which often ends in a tangle of tape and a very happy, proud child. In those moments, I am reminded of why we do this and the magic each of us can bring to others—not just at Christmas, but throughout the year.”

Outside of work, Victoria is an impeccable planner with strong organizational skills. She loves traveling with her husband, enjoys a wide variety of crafting activities, and places a high priority on caring for her immediate and extended family.

Victoria brings both professional experience and genuine heart to Hagar’s Heart, and she is grateful for the opportunity to continue supporting the organization’s mission every day.

I volunteer with Hagar's Heart because I have walked in the shoes of a survivor; I myself am a survivor of domestic violence. I hold Hagars Heart near and dear to my heart and I strive daily to make every survivor (man or woman) feel loved; I myself understand what these survivors are going through.

Since being with Hagar's Heart, I hold the I See You Boxes as a tool to achieve the feeling of being seen, loved, and worthy; something that is important to feel as a survivor.

It is our mission to let others know they are loved, seen, and worthy as well as feeling heard. Hagars Heart helps others get their voice back, one box at a time.
