🏡 The Safe Space: Why Remote Work is a Win for Our Sistas 🏡

At We Are Our Sista’s Keepers, we believe that every woman deserves a workplace that honors her boundaries, protects her peace, and—most importantly—keeps her safe. While "the office" is often called a professional standard, for many women, the transition to remote work has been a life-saving shift.

Here is why working from home is more than just a convenience—it’s a matter of safety and empowerment.

⚠️ The Reality of the Public Workplace

The statistics regarding safety in physical workplaces are a sobering reminder of why many of our sistas feel more secure at home:

Physical Safety: In 2024, the U.S. recorded 5,070 fatal work injuries. Shockingly, a worker died every 104 minutes from a work-related injury.

Violence & Homicide: Violence accounted for 733 workplace deaths in 2024. While women make up a smaller percentage of overall workplace fatalities, they account for over 15% of workplace homicides.

Harassment: Statistics show that in-person employees are more than twice as likely to experience sexual harassment at work compared to those working remotely. For women, the rate of harassment drops from 12% in-person to 5% when working remotely.

🌟 The Remote Work Advantage
Beyond avoiding the commute, remote work offers unique protections for women, especially those navigating difficult personal situations:

Psychological Safety: Remote work significantly reduces the daily "microaggressions" and office politics that often drain the mental health of women of color.

Control Over Environment: For sistas managing health issues or domestic transitions, home provides a controlled environment where you can attend to your needs without the "prying eyes" of a public office.

Flexibility for Life: Remote work allows for "work-life harmonization," giving you the time to be present for your family and your community without sacrificing your career growth.

🛡️ Protecting Yourself Anywhere
Whether you are remote, hybrid, or in-office, your safety is non-negotiable.

Set Digital Boundaries: Keep your home address and personal phone number private on company directories if possible.

Document Everything: If you experience "virtual" harassment (in DMs or video calls), take screenshots and keep a log.

Advocate for Flexibility: If your current role is pushing for a "return to office" that compromises your safety, reach out to HR or a mentor to discuss reasonable accommodations.

✨ Your career should elevate you, not endanger you. We are keeping watch over one another as we build futures that are safe, secure, and limitless.

Do you feel safer working from home, or do you miss the office connection? Let’s talk about it in the comments. 👇🏾

💜 Financial Abuse: The Invisible Chain 💜

At We Are Our Sista’s Keepers, we know that domestic harmony isn’t just about the absence of physical violence—it’s about the presence of freedom and respect. One of the most powerful ways an abuser maintains control is through financial abuse. It’s quiet, it’s gradual, and it’s designed to keep you from leaving.

📉 Did You Know?
Financial abuse occurs in 99% of domestic violence cases.
It is the number one reason survivors stay in or return to abusive relationships.

Victims lose an average of 1,200 hours of work each year due to domestic violence, impacting their long-term career growth and stability.

🚩 Recognizing the Red Flags
Financial abuse isn't always someone taking your wallet. It can look like:

The "Allowance": Giving you a strictly limited amount of money while they spend freely.

The Sabotage: Purposefully making you late for work, hiding your car keys, or making "scenes" at your workplace so you lose your job.

The Information Blackout: Keeping you in the dark about bank accounts, debt, or household income.

Identity Theft: Opening credit cards or taking out loans in your name without your permission.
Forced Signature: Pressuring you to sign financial documents you don't understand.

🛡️ Steps to Protect Your Future
If you feel your financial independence is being compromised, your safety is the priority. Here is how you can begin to regain control:

Gather Your Documents: If it's safe, keep copies of your ID, birth certificates, bank statements, and social security cards in a secure location (like a trusted friend's house or a digital cloud account they can't access).

Start a "Freedom Fund": Try to set aside small amounts of cash in a safe place. If possible, open a separate bank account at a different bank and opt for electronic statements only.

Check Your Credit: Use a free service to check your credit report. This helps you see if any accounts have been opened in your name.

Secure Your Tech: Change your PINs and passwords for banking and email. Avoid using birthdays or names the abuser could guess.
Reach Out: You don't have to do this alone. Reach out to a domestic violence advocate who can help you build a Financial Safety Plan.

✨ You are a leader, a provider, and a survivor. Your money is your labor, and your labor belongs to YOU.

If you or someone you know needs support, we are here. Let’s break the cycle of economic exclusion together.

⚠️ Why "One Last Time" Is One Time Too Many ⚠️

At We Are Our Sista’s Keepers, we understand the deep, aching desire for closure. You want to explain your side, hear an apology, or simply make sense of the pain. But when it comes to leaving an abusive or toxic relationship, that "one last talk" is often a trap disguised as a conversation.

The Hard Truth: Closure is something you give yourself, not something you negotiate with someone who hurt you.

📉 The Danger in the Numbers
Leaving is the most dangerous time for a survivor. Domestic violence experts and law enforcement data consistently show a chilling reality:

The 75% Risk: A survivor’s risk of being killed increases by 75% the moment they leave or attempt to leave.

The First 90 Days: The first three months after a breakup are the most high-risk for lethal escalation.

The Illusion of Safety: Many "last meetings" take place in "public" or "neutral" spaces, but the perpetrator often uses the journey to or from the location—or a moment of privacy—to strike.

🚫 There Is No Need for Closure
We often feel we owe the other person an explanation, or that we can't move on without their acknowledgment. You don't.
Silence is Your Power: Once you are gone, your safety is the only "closure" that matters.

They Won't Give You What You Seek: In most cases, a "one last talk" results in more manipulation, gaslighting, or violence—not the breakthrough you’re hoping for.

Your Life is the Priority: No conversation is worth your life. If you have already walked away, stay away.

💜 You Are Not Alone
If you are planning to leave or are being pressured for "one last meeting," please choose your life over their demands.

Don't go alone. * Don't go at all.

Block the number. True closure comes from the peace of a safe home and the strength of a sisterhood that has your back.

Keep yourself safe. Keep your sisters safe.

A Message from Our Founder
Hello everyone,
I’m Shannon Calandra Johnson, and today I wanted to take a moment to step out from behind the scenes and share the heart of why We Are Our Sista’s Keepers (WAOSK) exists.
Since founding this organization in August 2020, my mission has been rooted in a single, powerful belief: that no woman should ever have to walk through her darkest seasons alone. Having navigated my own journey of resilience—which many of you will soon read about in my upcoming book, Surviving the Devil—I know firsthand the strength it takes to rebuild.
WAOSK was born from that lived experience. It was built to be a sanctuary, a resource, and a sisterhood for women who are ready to reclaim their power and rewrite their stories. Whether we are providing support, sharing resources, or simply standing in the gap for one another, our goal is to ensure that every "Sista" knows she is seen, heard, and worthy.
As a veteran, a mother, and an entrepreneur, I’ve learned that our greatest victories often come after our hardest battles. But those victories are much sweeter when we achieve them together.
Thank you for being part of this community. Thank you for believing in the power of sisterhood. We are just getting started, and I am so honored to be on this journey with you.
With love and solidarity,
Shannon Calandra Johnson

Talking about it is the first step to healing

In the midst of an abusive relationship dreams are crushed, and self esteem is diminished. At WAOSK we work tirelessly to help our Sista's to find their dreams and turn them into reality through Small Business Ownership. With your support we take our Sista's through a journey of discovery of what they are passionate about, what skills they have that can be transformed into a business, or developing that business idea that they had been putting off because of abuse.

Our program covers startup, management, marketing, social media, human resources, accounting, financial management, and mentorship. Along with a $25,000 grant at the end of the program to cover costs for the 1st year of business. The biggest problem we found was financial abuse which is so under reported. Your support help us eliminate this problem and ultimately save returns to the abusive environment because of lack of financial resources.

WAOSK is very excited about our first fundraiser of the year. So far we have raised $40 towards our $50,000 goal to get Certification Training, Testing, Practice Exams and Laptops for 50 fallen Sista's to be able elevate their skills and improve their financial independence. Thank you to those supporters who have gotten our event off to a great start.
