Good evening…
It is with great sadness that I report the Apple Valley Unified School District Board of Trustees voted to approve both proposals to reduce classified and certificated staff.
This decision will have immediate and lasting consequences for our schools and our community.
For classified and certificated employees, this vote represents far more than a budgetary action, it is the loss of livelihoods, healthcare, stability, and dignity for over 250 dedicated public servants. These are the employees who keep schools open, safe, clean, fed, supported, and functioning every single day. Many have devoted years of faithful service to this district. A reduction of this magnitude creates not only financial hardship, but emotional distress, uncertainty for families, and a deep erosion of trust in district leadership.
For students, the impact will be felt in every classroom, hallway, and campus. Fewer staff means reduced academic support, maintenance, fewer safety interventions, and less individual attention, especially for our most vulnerable students. When trusted adults are removed from school sites, students lose relationships that foster safety, consistency, and success. Educational quality suffers, not because students or educators failed, but because the system withdrew the very people who make learning possible.
For the community, this decision weakens the foundation of public education in Apple Valley. Schools are not just buildings, they are ecosystems sustained by people. Cutting over a quarter of the workforce sends a clear message that the human cost was outweighed by expediency. The long term damage to morale, recruitment, retention, and student outcomes will far exceed any short term financial relief.
This vote did not simply reduce positions.
It disrupted lives.
It diminished student support.
And it compromised the future strength of our schools.
The consequences of this decision will be felt for years to come.
Please don’t forget this during election season.
