Fundasaun CODIVA organized a workshop on child protection and preventing abuse in Timor-Leste, bringing together members of the LGBTIQ+ community, students, and community-based organizations.
We welcomed MP Nurima Ribeiro Alkatiri from the National Parliament’s Commission F and Ms. Anita Santos from The Asia Foundation’s Nabilan Programme as guest speakers to discuss child protection policies, challenges in addressing abuse, and the role of communities in protecting children.
Community members raised important questions about how poverty, inequality, and social exclusion increase children’s vulnerability to abuse and exploitation, especially among marginalized and disadvantaged communities.
Discussions also highlighted the importance of understanding consent and power imbalances, protecting every child regardless of gender or identity, and holding individuals accountable rather than blaming or stigmatizing entire communities. Participants also emphasized confidential reporting, protecting victims’ privacy, and ensuring access to support without fear of blame or discrimination.
Child protection is everyone’s responsibility. Beyond laws and policies, families, communities, civil society, and public institutions must work together to address the causes of abuse and ensure every child grows up free from violence, exploitation, and discrimination.
