NOT IN OUR NAME: Why Rural Women belong in every courtroom and Decision-Making Table

Let's take our minds back to the Deportees court case where SRWA Southern Africa Litigation Centre and litigation Centre challenged the constitutionality of the Deportation. The court rulling said SRWA doesn't qualify to stand. A question is are women not full citizens to safeguard the country's constitution? Does the family rule of "UMFATI BEING THE FIRST BORN OF THE HUSBAND APPLY EVEN HERE???

At SRWA , we know that when decisions are made in the dark whether about land or about secret international deals it is rural women and communities who bear the brunt .

Today, we are not just farmers. We are Constitutional Watchdogs.

SRWA had unapologetically participated as an applicant in the Deportees Court Case challenging the US-Eswatini deportation agreement . We have taken this stand because this secretive deal was signed without Parliament violating Section 238 of our Constitution on signing international agreements.

Why does this matter for Women’s involvement in decision-making?

We Ensure Accountability-when the Executive branch acts alone, they forget the people. Our involvement in this case proves that women’s participation stops the "boys' club" from trading away our sovereignty behind closed doors .

We are the guardians and we protect the future: "No government should be allowed to bypass Parliament. Citizens deserve to know what agreements their Government is signing in their name, especially when it involves human lives" .

From the fields to the courts- whether we are fighting for land rights against family members and Chiefs who silence us , or fighting for constitutional law in the High Court, the message is the same: "Whenever I suggested something it was not considered hence I thought I should leave... because I don’t add any value" NO MORE. We are adding value where it hurts.

The Deportees case shows that constitutional accountability is not just a legal technicality it is a shield that protects us from being treated as a "dumping ground" for the world’s problems .

We demand transparency in international agreements and the respect for the Rule of Law.

Join the Swaziland Rural Women’s Assembly. Our voice is the Constitution’s backbone.

🌍 Africa Day: No African Is a Foreigner in Africa

As we mark Africa Day, the Rural Women’s Assembly stands in solidarity with Rural Women’s Assembly South Africa against the ongoing xenophobia that continues to divide our communities and threaten the dignity and safety of African people.

Africa Day reminds us that our struggles are shared. Poverty, unemployment, hunger, climate crisis and inequality are not caused by migrants or refugees. They are the result of unjust systems, weak leadership and economies that fail ordinary people.

As rural women, peasants and food producers, we reject hatred and violence. No African is our enemy. Our enemies are hunger, inequality, landlessness, corporate greed and the politics of division.

Today, we call for unity, dignity and justice across Africa.

No to xenophobia | Yes to African unity | Yes to justice for all.

Restoring wetlands, reviving traditions, enhancing economies.

As the Rural Women's Assembly - Sicandvulo Sabomake, we thought we were honored to be invited to this event but we were left deeply disappointed. Perhaps it's because we weren't oriented on how the process works. But here's the reality, women who are said to be "empowered" were seated at the back, as spectators.

This event was meant to develop recommendations on empowering women in agriculture, yet only Members of Parliament were given the floor. That might make sense if there had been prior consultations with organizations and constituencies but there were none. We don't just attend events to trust that our voices will be shared later.

Imagine hearing that 5,000 women in the country are doing drip irrigation, yet working directly with farmers, I cannot name even one farmer who has been empowered by this innovation.

To the EU, OACPS-EU Parliamentary Assembly, and all decision-makers here are concrete recommendations from rural women:

1. A free and accessible (Farmer Input Subsidy PROGRAM (FISP) that includes indigenous seeds, not just hybrid or commercial varieties.
2. Land certification for women to protect them from land grabbing and ensure tenure security.
3. At least one hectare of land per woman farmer- land is the first input because it is inseparable from the Agrarian question.
4. Direct market access for women, no more exploitative middlemen.
5. Agroecology markets that recognize and fairly price food grown using traditional, sustainable methods.
6. Promote farmer-managed seed systems to de-fossilize agriculture especially during these world wars when supply chains are weaponized and food sovereignty is a matter of survival.
7. Protection of indigenous seeds including community seed banks and bans on seed patenting that criminalize farmers.
8. Technology transfer that reaches grassroots farmers, drip irrigation and other innovations must come with training, inputs, and follow-up.
9. Mandatory consultation with rural women's organizations before any parliamentary assembly on women in agriculture.

We are not asking for seats at the table. We are demanding that the table be built where we stand

🌾 This year, we celebrate the strength, wisdom, and resilience of rural women farmers across Southern Africa and beyond.

Women farmers continue to protect seeds, preserve biodiversity, feed communities, and build resilience in the face of climate crisis, hunger, and inequality. Yet despite their vital role, many still face barriers to land, resources, markets, and decision making.

At our upcoming Consultative Dialogue, we honour and amplify the voices of rural women who are already building solutions rooted in agroecology, food sovereignty, climate justice, and collective care.

WE FEED NATIONS. WE SUSTAIN LIFE. WE DEMAND JUSTICE.

Across Southern Africa, rural women rise before dawn, working the land, saving seeds, feeding families, and holding communities together. Yet their labour remains unseen, undervalued, and unsupported.

This Labour Day, the Rural Women’s Assembly Southern Africa honours the power, resilience, and leadership of rural women workers, farmers, seed keepers, caregivers, and community builders.

OUR LABOUR IS NOT INVISIBLE.
OUR KNOWLEDGE IS NOT SECONDARY.
OUR RIGHTS ARE NOT NEGOTIABLE.

We call for:
• Recognition of rural women as workers and rights holders
• Secure access to land with water, and seeds
• Fair and just food systems
• Protection from exploitation and climate injustice

Without rural women's labour, there is no food system. Without justice, there is no future.

Today, the Swaziland Rural Women’s Assembly delivered a powerful petition to the Ministry of Agriculture in Mbabane, calling on the Eswatini Government to sign the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Peasants and Other People Working in Rural Areas (UNDROP).

This declaration is a crucial step forward for the Rural Women’s Assembly, as it affirms the rights of women to land, water, and the ownership of indigenous seeds. For thousands of rural women in Eswatini, signing UNDROP would mean more than policy change; it would mean real food sovereignty, empowering them to take full control of the food they grow, sustain their families, and strengthen their communities.

On behalf of the Minister of Agriculture, Nikiwe Dlamini formally received the petition from SRWA Chairperson Lonhlanhla Mthethwa. In a symbolic and meaningful gesture, rural women presented the Ministry with indigenous seeds; highlighting the importance of partnership, preservation of traditional knowledge, and the urgent need to protect rural women’s rights to land and food systems.
