Children play in the background while Mums participate in the Build on Books 'Learn to Earn' project in Waterloo 😀 The old library now doubles as a technical and vocational learning centre, bringing vital skills training to help people into self-employment. We currently have 7 sewing machines, but we need another 13 as we currently have 20 students. (But that will grow!)

Some of the women are already making clothes on commission, which is a big part of Learn to Earn!

Due to other favourable exchange rates, the machines now only cost £165 pounds if you or your group would like to sponsor one🥰

He is Build on Books scholarship student, Mamoud Barrie again! He was part of the team that won the Orange National Venture Prize competition!! The team's project is called MobiCare, which is inspired by a desire to help reduce maternal mortality in Sierra Leone. It's an offline application that connects expectant mothers with health facilities and reminds them of their appointments even without Internet access. I really hope they can take this further because it could be life-saving in Sierra Leone, especially in places like Pepel where we help a maternity Clinic.

Our wonderful Build on Books scholar, Mahmoud Barrie has been inducted into the clinical phase of his pharmacy training at the White Coat Ceremony. It is a transition to clinical practice and is a reminder of the professional responsibility and compassion the role demands. We are all so proud of you, Mahmoud!

Congratulations to the Build on Books scholarship student, Lamrana Koroma, for winning the election for Auditor General for the PAM (Public Administration and Management) Society at the Milton Margai Technical University in Freetown. Everyone at St Clements School in Kwama and the whole Build On Books family is very proud of you!
The Build on Books scholarship program is turning out some very exceptional students. Our students come from highly disadvantaged backgrounds, but we are working together to secure a great future for them.

It’s a shame the fan is making so much noise because our head girl is making a lovely speech about what the solar power means to her. We did didn’t dare turn off the fan because the heat is so bad in Sierra Leone right now!! Children were fainting in the classroom because of the heat which is why we decided that now was the time for Build on Books to install fans and lighting at St Clement School

This is a life changing moment for all the students at St Clements School in Kwama; thanks to a generous to Build on Books. We now have solar power for every classroom. Students preparing for exams can study at night time and we can also hold extra classes.
Students can also feel safer as the light should hopefully scare away snakes and other predators or at least make them visible. Life is pretty tough for students in Sierra Leone but in Kwama it’s just got a bit easier
