For Martha, receiving a wheelchair means greater mobility and independence. For her and fellow specially abled persons in Kenema, a refurbished skills training centre means more opportunities to turn ambition into a livelihood.

The centre now offers improved spaces and essential equipment for computer training, sewing and weaving, practical skills that can create pathways to economic independence.

Funded by the Government of India and implemented by UNDP in Sierra Leone with the Ministry of Social Welfare, the Enabling Economic Independence for Specially Abled Persons Project is helping ensure opportunity is within reach.

Two days of conversations. One recurring message: strong development results need strong systems behind them.

As the workshop on strengthening programme delivery in Sierra Leone came to a close, implementing partners reflected on what it takes to move from plans and resources to results that can be seen, measured and sustained.

Different areas, but the same challenge: how do we make every part of delivery work better?

From stronger evidence in reporting and embedding PSEAH throughout implementation, to social and environmental safeguards and more realistic procurement planning, the recommendations were practical.

Because good development isn’t only about what we set out to achieve. It’s also about how well we deliver it.

Ability is everywhere. Opportunity should be too. 🇸🇱

For persons with disabilities, access to skills and resources can open doors to livelihoods, independence and greater choice.

With funding from the Government of India, UNDP and the Ministry of Social Welfare are supporting six skills training centres across six districts. Centres in Kambia and Kenema are now complete.

At today’s handover in Kambia, renovated training facilities, 80 sewing machines, eight computers and other essential supplies were handed over to support training in sewing, welding, weaving and soap making.

UN Resident Coordinator Seraphine Wakana reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to leaving no one behind, while stressing the importance of continued monitoring for lasting impact.

As UNDP Deputy Resident Representative Kevin Petrini put it, these centres are “gateways to opportunity, where skills are nurtured, confidence is strengthened, and lives are transformed.”

Turning international cooperation into national development results. 🇸🇱

With UNDP in Sierra Leone support, the Government of launched its South-South and Triangular Cooperation Strategic Plan 2026-2030, translating the Freetown Declaration into a practical roadmap aligned with national development priorities.

The plan centres on stronger coordination, resource mobilisation and measurable results, with inclusion at its heart.

“If we work together, we can turn South-South and Triangular Cooperation into a national mechanism for delivery,” said UNDP Resident Representative Frederick Ampiah.

Stronger partnerships. Accountable delivery. Better results for communities.

UNDP in Sierra Leone has opened a two-day workshop to equip implementing partners with practical tools to translate programme commitments into measurable development results.

Through shared learning and practical discussions, partners are strengthening how they plan programmes, track progress, manage risks and use resources responsibly with inclusion, safeguards and accountability at every stage.

The workshop covers results-based management, monitoring and evaluation, financial management and HACT requirements, social and environmental safeguards, gender mainstreaming, prevention of sexual exploitation, abuse and harassment (PSEAH), and communication and visibility.

Opening the workshop, UNDP Sierra Leone’s leadership underscored that effective partnerships and strong programme management are essential to delivering lasting development impact.

The goal: partners better equipped to deliver programmes that respond to people’s needs, demonstrate results and build public trust.

🌟 Spotlight on Aminata: From Aspiration to Achievement

Looking back at a powerful moment from the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework Field Visit mission in May, when we met Aminata Kargbo, a young woman whose journey shows how investing in skills can unlock opportunities and transform lives.

After her education was disrupted, Aminata joined 100 young people who received practical, market-driven training through a partnership between UNDP Sierra Leone , the National Youth Commission Sierra Leone and Sierra Tropical Limited.

Today, she is employed as a machine operator at Sierra Tropical Limited, confidently applying skills she once only dreamed of acquiring. 👷🏾‍♀️

Aminata’s story shows the power of partnerships to connect skills development with decent work, advance women’s economic empowerment and ensure that no young person is left behind. 🇸🇱

As part of the Peace, Human Security, and Resilience in Kailahun project, funded by the Japan - The Government of Japan , the Independent Commission for Peace and National Cohesion ICPNC -SL (ICPNC) conducted capacity-building sessions on conflict prevention, mediation, and early warning response in Kissi Teng Chiefdom, Kailahun. Through interactive learning and role-play, community members from various villages successfully transitioned into active peace monitors.

In parallel, community members were trained by the JaSiLe Foundation to serve as champions against sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) through localized, small-group awareness sessions. The champions will be raising awareness across communities regarding prevention of SGBV and referral pathways.

With support from SEND - SIERRA LEONE, the Community Safety and Border Watch Committees in Kissi Teng Chiefdom, Kailahun District, are now fully operational. By collaborating closely with state authorities, local citizens are actively reporting illegal activities like human trafficking to keep their neighborhoods secure. This week, UNDP in Sierra Leone had the opportunity to directly hear from the community members about the impact of the initiative.

This initiative is a core part of the Peace, Human Security, and Resilience in Kailahun project. Funded by the Japan - The Government of Japan, we are working together to make marginalized border communities safer and more resilient.
