On April 11th, 2026, the Nigerian Community in Skåne hosted a meaningful Town Hall Meeting themed “Social Cultural Responsibility” at Föreningscenter Nobel 21 in Malmö. The event brought together community members, leaders, and representatives from other African communities for an engaging and informative session.

A key highlight of the event was the presence of guest speakers from the Social Service Malmö, who took time to educate attendees on the role and responsibilities of social services in Sweden. Their message was clear and reassuring: social services are here to help, support, and protect families, with children’s safety and well-being as the top priority.

The session provided valuable insights into how social services operate, how they engage with families, and what both new and long-term immigrants should know when navigating the system. By breaking down common misconceptions, the speakers emphasized that social services are not to be feared, but rather seen as partners and allies in ensuring a safe and supportive environment for children and families.

Participants had the opportunity to ask questions, share concerns, and gain clarity on important issues surrounding parenting, cultural differences, and legal responsibilities. The open dialogue created a safe and respectful space for learning and mutual understanding.

The presence of leaders and members from other African communities further enriched the discussion, fostering unity and shared learning across cultures. It was a powerful reminder that while backgrounds may differ, the goal of raising strong, safe, and well-supported families is a common one.

The Nigerian Community in Skåne continues to take important steps in educating, empowering, and strengthening its members through initiatives like this building trust, promoting awareness, and encouraging collaboration within the wider society.

The Nigerian Community Skåne wished to remind all parents and guardians of our upcoming Town Hall Meeting in collaboration with the Social Services Malmö to address issues affecting families, especially children here in Malmö with the themed “Social Cultural Responsibility.”

Recent concerns about increasing African youth involvement in criminal activities make it necessary for us as a community to come together, stay informed and take proactive steps. This meeting is not just informative, it is essential.

As parents, you might be having key issues questions you want the social services to address on that day, could your questions be:

• How Social Services define a “child at risk”
• What triggers an investigation into a family
• The stages of intervention before serious actions are taken
• Circumstances under which a child may be removed from the home
• The rights of parents during investigations
• How misunderstandings between African parenting styles and Swedish laws can be addressed
• Available support for children already influenced by crime
• Support systems available for struggling parents.

This is an opportunity to gain clarity, ask your own reality questions and better understand how to guide and protect your children in today’s environment.

Please do not assume this does not concern you. Every child is influenced by their surroundings and early awareness can make a significant difference.

We strongly encourage all parents and guardians to attend. Ignorant isn’t an excuse to the law.
