SONIC CITIZENS 2026 OPEN CALL - Creating Together and Building Community
WHEN: Friday September 25th and Saturday September 26th
WHERE: The Culture Sound Zone.

Sonic Citizens brings people together to celebrate the Culture Sound Zone and explore new ways to build community through co-creation. Sonic Citizens showcases the unique meeting places, activities and forms of expression that make-up Malmö’s Culture Sound Zone. As part of this event we have an OPEN CALL to commission new work from creators that are connected to the Culture Sound Zone and Sofielund industrial area.

The THEME of Sonic Citizens 2026 is Creating Together and Building Community. We invite proposals for performances, installations and exhibitions, and also workshops, educational activities and panel discussions that engage with this theme. We would particularly like to hear about new collaborations between two or more different creators.

When we get your application we will invite you to come and tell us more about what you want to do, what you need to do it and if we can help you make it happen as part of the Sonic Citizens event. Last year Sonic Citizens hosted content from many different creators including:

♥ Nablus and Lyktan Associations presented a Palestinian Fashion Show at Hypnos Theatre, ♥ Loud Numbers and LARARIUM presented A Symphony for Bureaucracy at Blå Huset and ♥ Teranga Music Collective presented an African Drum Workshop and Collaborative Recording Session at Bullret Musikhus ♥

Sonic Citizens is at Hypnos this morning - so will Paul and Janne and free speech in the Kulturljudzon will be on the agenda.

Let me set the record straight. Det är INTE sant. JIFF skriver "samtliga biografägare i staden har sagt nej till att husera vårt arrangemang." JAG / Hypnos Theatre skulle verkligen ha uppskattat lite uppmarksanmhet - lite cred snälla - i detta sammanhang. Snälla klumpa inte in mig i gruppen av uppenbarligen, mesiga biografer.

Hello Ola,

Hypnos Theatre is well accustomed to and very experienced in hosting portions of large film festivals that are headquartered elsewhere. In these instances, I usually request to host the more experimental, challenging liberal elements of the program as I feel that this character suits the Hypnos Theatre ethos.

Hypnos Theatre has no employees and I have never hosted a festival on the scale of JIFF. Also considering my prior professional commitments, I simply do not have the time this year to make Hypnos into the venue capable of accommodating the full JIFF program.

I would very happily discuss hosting an evening of special programming with JIFF if that is possible.

I hope you find a suitable home for the festival and I wish it could be Hypnos but we simply are not there yet.
