ABOUT THE PRESENTATION

In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, laborers across northern India negotiated rapid industrial change, emerging technologies, and shifting class hierarchies. In response to these changes, Indian Muslim artisans began publicly asserting the relationships between their religion and their labor, using the increasingly accessible popular press to assert Islamic traditions “from below.” In this talk, Amanda Lanzillo explores stories colonial-era social and technological changes through the experiences of metalsmiths, stonemasons, tailors, press workers, and carpenters, drawing on narratives from her book, Pious Labor. The talk centers previously understudied Urdu-language technical manuals and community histories, to examine both the materiality of artisanal production and the cultural agency of artisanal producers.
