We develop temporary shelters to provide safety and dignity for displaced people. Better Shelter is a humanitarian non profit organization based in Sweden.

We started as a small social enterprise in 2010 with a big mission dedicated to sheltering displaced persons with safety, dignity and hope on their path towards a more stable life in a permanent home of their own. While our work has grown in scale, our small team continues to offer support to our partners and deliver our shelters internationally from our warehouses in Poland, Turkey and Panama. Since 2015, we have delivered more than 65,000 shelters to emergency, crisis and development programs in over 78 countries. We have been able to impact the lives of hundreds of thousands of displaced persons through our collaborations with humanitarian NGOs and INGOs, UN bodies, philanthropic foundations, academic institutions, including the UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR, the IKEA Foundation, Aga Khan Agency for Habitat and the University of Baghdad.

When the floods came in 2022, Mongal’s house didn’t just break. The water lifted it and carried it away.

Today, his new stands on a raised clay plinth near Silchar, built by SEEDS using a frame, local materials and local skills.

“This shelter feels like home,” Mongal says.

A home is a place to recover after a disaster and prepare for what comes next.

What if one shelter frame could adapt as a family’s needs change?

A tent cover for urgent needs, prefabricated panels for a temporary home, local materials and insulation for improvements over time. Different options, all using the same frame.

In , we tested this approach with the الهلال الأحمر المغربي | Moroccan Red Crescent, IFRC and local builders. Their experience helped us improve the design.

Together with SEEDS , we’re working to make resilient homes part of disaster preparedness, using adaptable frames and .

Our goal is to provide homes for one million people in India by 2035.

Meet Muayyad, a from Hass, .
After years of conflict, he returned to teach in his village and found schools badly damaged.

As a first step towards getting children back to learning, Basmeh & Zeitooneh assembled temporary classrooms provided by , creating a safe place for students to learn while their schools were being rebuilt.

For children living through conflict and displacement, teachers bring much more than lessons. They provide care, encouragement, stability and hope.

Delivering a shelter is one step. Making sure it is installed safely and adapted to local conditions matters just as much.

Before, during and after implementation, our technical team works with partners on planning, training, assembly, maintenance and local upgrades, helping shelters remain safe and suited to communities’ needs.

The knowledge stays with local partners, who can train others and adapt shelters as needs change.

Today marks three years since the struck ’s Atlas Mountains.

Entire villages were damaged, and hundreds of thousands of people were left without a safe place to call home.

Together with the الهلال الأحمر المغربي | MRCS and IFRC, we provided safe for families who had lost their homes. Some shelters have also been used as classrooms and healthcare spaces, giving families a safe place to live, helping children continue learning and bringing care closer to communities.

Three years on, recovery continues. Some families are still living in the shelters while their permanent homes.

A shelter is not the end of the journey. It is a temporary place to find , privacy and a sense of home along the way.

“I want to become a doctor.” 🩺

Fatima is 12 years old. When she returned to school in Idlib, Syria, she found cracked walls, too few desks and classrooms exposed to the weather.

When she first entered her new classroom, she was happy to see desks, a board and her classmates around her.
They are studying in one of the temporary classrooms installed by while permanent schools are being repaired.

For Fatima, being back at school means learning, playing, seeing her friends and dreaming about becoming a doctor.

48 temporary classrooms are supporting around 1,450 students across 14 schools in Southern Idlib.

What if was ready before strikes?

Across India, the monsoon season is once again bringing severe , forcing families from their homes. 🇮🇳

This shelter frame can be built in under an hour, combined with local materials and adapted to different climates, cultures and community needs. A shelter system helping families to rebuild after disaster, and to be better prepared for the next one. 🏠

When night falls and the lights come on, every moment inside the should feel , without families feeling watched from outside.🏠

Their experience helps shape every improvement. We listen to them and learn from the partners working closely with them. 🤝

The Relief Housing Unit (RHU) v1.3 grew from what we learned, while building on what worked well in previous versions. New panels let less light through, making silhouettes far less visible from outside and everyday life inside more private.

The panels also help keep shelters cooler in hot , are easier to recycle and have a lower CO₂e footprint.

When people are forced to flee, humanitarian workers are often closest to their everyday realities. They support communities, listen and respond, and bring what they learn back to us.

When we design and improve our shelters, the safety, privacy and day-to-day comfort of the people who use them guide our decisions.🏠

The experience of our humanitarian partners, together with the voices of the communities they work with, helps us understand what works and what needs to change.
