Better Shelter

We develop temporary shelters to provide safety and dignity for displaced people. Better Shelter is a humanitarian non profit organization based in Sweden.

We started as a small social enterprise in 2010 with a big mission dedicated to sheltering displaced persons with safety, dignity and hope on their path towards a more stable life in a permanent home of their own. While our work has grown in scale, our small team continues to offer support to our partners and deliver our shelters internationally from our warehouses in Poland, Turkey and Panama. Si

nce 2015, we have delivered more than 65,000 shelters to emergency, crisis and development programs in over 78 countries. We have been able to impact the lives of hundreds of thousands of displaced persons through our collaborations with humanitarian NGOs and INGOs, UN bodies, philanthropic foundations, academic institutions, including the UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR, the IKEA Foundation, Aga Khan Agency for Habitat and the University of Baghdad.

Across India, the monsoon season is once again bringing severe , forcing families from their homes. 🇮🇳

This shelter frame can be built in under an hour, combined with local materials and adapted to different climates, cultures and community needs. A shelter system helping families to rebuild after disaster, and to be better prepared for the next one. 🏠

When night falls and the lights come on, every moment inside the should feel , without families feeling watched from outside.🏠

Their experience helps shape every improvement. We listen to them and learn from the partners working closely with them. 🤝

The Relief Housing Unit (RHU) v1.3 grew from what we learned, while building on what worked well in previous versions. New panels let less light through, making silhouettes far less visible from outside and everyday life inside more private.

The panels also help keep shelters cooler in hot , are easier to recycle and have a lower CO₂e footprint.

When people are forced to flee, humanitarian workers are often closest to their everyday realities. They support communities, listen and respond, and bring what they learn back to us.

When we design and improve our shelters, the safety, privacy and day-to-day comfort of the people who use them guide our decisions.🏠

The experience of our humanitarian partners, together with the voices of the communities they work with, helps us understand what works and what needs to change.

Did you know? In India 🇮🇳, more than 363,000 homes were damaged by floods, storms, and other weather-related disasters in 2024.

Climate disasters are forcing more families from their homes. Shelter is no longer only about emergency response. It is also part of how communities prepare for future disasters.

Together with , we’re combining the Better Shelter frame with locally sourced materials like bamboo to create safer homes that can be adapted to local needs and build on local knowledge.

Returning does not always mean having a home to return to.

Forced to flee conflict in Syria in 2019, Fouad spent years living with his family in a shelter we provided in Watan Camp, northern Idlib. After returning to his village following the fall of the Syrian regime, he found his home in ruins.

Today, the same shelter that protected his family during displacement is still their home.

In 2025, 14.7 million displaced people returned home worldwide, yet 117.8 million people remained forcibly . For many families, the journey does not end when they return, it continues as they rebuild their homes and futures.

After fleeing their homes many times due to conflict, families in Gaza are creating these everyday moments again.

As approaches, these scenes show how people continue to build daily life, even in the most difficult circumstances.

A safe place to stay is often where that begins.

Thanks to , with support from the and partners, thousands of units have been provided across , together with 15,000 mattresses from . Today, they are helping create temporary neighbourhoods and are being used as homes, health centres and classrooms while families wait for a more permanent place to call home.

Every child has the right to a safe space where they can simply be a child, no matter where they are in the world.

For children affected by conflict and , childhood is often disrupted. Education is interrupted, and they become more vulnerable to exploitation.

When are forced to flee their homes, they often leave with only what they can carry. In moments of fear and uncertainty, staying together is what matters most. Parents, children, grandparents, siblings, and loved ones holding onto each other through displacement.

When families arrive in a refugee camp, a gives them a place to gather, rest, and feel safer together. A door they can lock, a space where children can sleep, play, and where families can begin to heal and slowly rebuild life together. 💛

In El Chopá, a small village in La Mojana, Colombia, children gather every day in “Ludoteca”, a creative learning centre built by the community.

Today, around 65 children and young people use this space to read, play, learn, and spend time together. They feel safe and happy. For parents, it means less stress, and the chance to return to work.

This space was created using two we provided, combined with local materials and traditional techniques. It was developed by , with support from Accenture Foundation, The Primavera Foundation, and Distribuciones Repan.
