When are forced to flee their homes, they often leave with only what they can carry. In moments of fear and uncertainty, staying together is what matters most. Parents, children, grandparents, siblings, and loved ones holding onto each other through displacement.

When families arrive in a refugee camp, a gives them a place to gather, rest, and feel safer together. A door they can lock, a space where children can sleep, play, and where families can begin to heal and slowly rebuild life together. 💛

In El Chopá, a small village in La Mojana, Colombia, children gather every day in “Ludoteca”, a creative learning centre built by the community.

Today, around 65 children and young people use this space to read, play, learn, and spend time together. They feel safe and happy. For parents, it means less stress, and the chance to return to work.

This space was created using two we provided, combined with local materials and traditional techniques. It was developed by , with support from Accenture Foundation, The Primavera Foundation, and Distribuciones Repan.

GAZA — April 5, 2026: UNDP is building shelters for families who have lost their homes.

With additional funding from Sweden, UNDP can install more shelters from us in Gaza through its neighbourhood approach, alongside water, waste management, and other essential services. Together, these help create the basic conditions people need to rest, recover in privacy, and start rebuilding daily life while permanent housing is rebuilt.

When your home is gone, a door that closes matters. A place to rest. A bit of privacy.

Through increased support from , more people in will have a temporary home in our shelters, as part of UNDP’s neighbourhood approach.

These transitional shelters support a wider recovery effort, helping link immediate needs with longer-term recovery until people can return to permanent homes.

We are grateful to contribute a small part in this wider effort to support people in Gaza.

Over the past decade, weather-related disasters have forced people to leave their homes more than 250 million times, often in regions already affected by poverty and conflict.

As the , disasters happen more often. Many people by or return home within weeks or months.

But when disasters keep happening, families may be forced to move again and again, or live in temporary for a long time. shelters help them stay safer and rebuild daily life.

Samira returned home after years of displacement. Her house was gone.

Ramadan in northwest . Inside a small shelter kitchen, Samira prepares food for the evening meal. She supports her family by working in nearby fields and preparing meals to break the fast.
