Sparkle Crosses the Ocean is more than a story about recycling, upcycling, and environmental stewardship. It is a story about believing that what may seem discarded can find a new purpose, and about having the confidence to believe in yourself and your abilities, even when you don’t fit in.

A message that says it all: “I matter too.”

Children with disabilities from Constantin Pufan Inclusive Education School didn’t just write an essay or build a tree. They built a home for Sparkle made from courage, and the simple wish to be seen.

We may look different. Learn different. Speak different. Face different challenges. But underneath all of that, we’re the same - same need to be seen, same need to be heard, same right to grow, same access to opportunity.

That’s the hope Sparkle carries. Not that our differences disappear, but that they were never the thing standing in the way.

Every great learning journey is made stronger through friendship, collaboration, and teamwork.

Through recycling and upcycling adventures, Sparkle and Foxy help students discover that protecting our planet is a shared responsibility. Where there’s a will, there’s a way and there’s no better way to learn about the power of friendship than through the adventures in our first children’s book, Sparkle Crosses the Ocean.

Third graders at Complexul Educational Laude-Reut met Sparkle and Foxy for the first time, and their excitement said it all. Sparkle’s courage to explore the world and her mission to protect the planet by giving forgotten pieces of plastic a second chance through recycling reminded our young students just how much of a difference they can make.

Thank you, educators and staff, for all you do and thank you, dear students, for your enthusiasm as you keep discovering the beauty of our world!

Diana Ionescu, MD, PhD, (Ionescu Diana) is a Senior Pediatric ENT Consultant and Head of the ENT Department at Dr. Victor Gomoiu Children’s Clinical Hospital in Bucharest, Romania (Spitalul Clinic De Copii Dr. Victor Gomoiu). She previously served as the hospital’s Medical Director for four years and currently serves as its spokesperson.

Dr. Victor Gomoiu Children’s Clinical Hospital is one of Romania’s dedicated pediatric healthcare institutions, providing specialized medical care for children and supporting families through a multidisciplinary approach focused on compassion, excellence, and innovation. The hospital plays an important role in advancing pediatric healthcare, training medical professionals, and creating opportunities for collaboration that improve outcomes for children.

Holding a PhD in Medicine, Dr. Ionescu is passionate about advancing pediatric healthcare through clinical excellence, education, research, and international collaboration.
