Across Macaronesia, NGOs, researchers, conservation practitioners and coastal communities are already working to protect marine ecosystems, restore habitats, monitor biodiversity and respond to growing environmental pressures across the Atlantic. 🐟

But these challenges do not stop at borders.

🌐 For the first time, brings together organisations from mainland Portugal, the Azores, Madeira, Cabo Verde and the Canary Islands around a shared regional reality: Macaronesia as one connected ocean system.

The goal is not to start from scratch, but to connect what already exists:

Through collaboration, knowledge exchange, and shared learning, COOL26 aims to 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝗰𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗮.

Across the Azores, Madeira, the Canary Islands and Cabo Verde, marine ecosystems, species and communities are deeply interconnected.

This region supports:
🐋 globally important biodiversity
🏝️ coastal communities
🎣 fisheries and tourism
🧪 marine science and local economies

But the balance of the North Atlantic is under increasing pressure.

Climate change, pollution, biodiversity loss, and coastal pressures are affecting ecosystems that do not recognise borders.

🌊 We believe a healthy ocean depends on informed decision-making and empowered leaders.

The 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 – 𝗣𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗴𝗮𝗹 𝗢𝗰𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗙𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 is a high-level capacity-sharing programme that equips senior government officials, including the world’s most ocean-dependent and climate-vulnerable countries, to lead integrated ocean action at national, regional and international level.
In just five intensive days in Lisbon, Fellows 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲, 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼-𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗴𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀, such as UNCLOS and the BBNJ Agreement, into meaningful national action.

A Madeira dá mais um passo na liderança da conservação marinha na Europa.

A assinatura do Memorando de Entendimento entre o Governo Regional da Madeira, a Fundação Oceano Azul, a ARDITI e a Pristine Seas da National Geographic Society lança um programa estratégico para avaliar e reforçar a rede de Áreas Marinhas Protegidas da região.

O objetivo é claro: proteger eficazmente 30% do mar da Madeira até 2030, incluindo pelo menos 10% com proteção total, valorizando o seu Capital Natural Marinho.

Ao longo dos próximos três anos, o programa irá mobilizar ciência, participação pública e cooperação institucional para apoiar decisões de conservação baseadas na melhor ciência disponível.

Entre as ações previstas estão:
🌊 Expedição científica costeira na ilha da Madeira, Porto Santo e Desertas já este ano;
📍 Monitorização das Ilhas Selvagens;
🌊 Expedição científica ao mar profundo e Ilhas Selvagens em 2027;
📚 Desenvolvimento de estudos técnicos, científicos e jurídicos;
🤝 Reforço das parcerias institucionais e da participação pública.

Esta parceria dá continuidade a uma colaboração que já contribuiu para a expansão da Reserva Natural das Ilhas Selvagens, hoje uma das maiores Áreas Marinhas Protegidas com proteção total da Europa.

From identifying priority areas to designing and managing Marine Protected Areas, evidence shows that protection grounded in science delivers real results: 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀, 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗰𝗲𝗮𝗻.

Political ambition is the backbone of effective multilateralism — and nowhere is this more evident than in ocean governance. 🌊

The ocean requires countries willing to align around science, precaution, and long-term responsibility — and to defend these choices across multilateral processes.
🌎 Raising ambition is essential to protect a system that sustains life, climate stability, and global prosperity.
Countries leading on ocean action are setting a high bar, transforming participation into a mark of global ocean leadership — one that moves beyond declarations and delivers coordinated action.

Across international processes, governments are showing determination to advance the ocean agenda by:

The world needs bold action for ocean conservation by advancing science, driving policy change, and transforming decision-making — ensuring a healthy, resilient, and sustainable ocean.

In 2026, our focus is clear:
🔹 Deliver ocean conservation at scale by supporting robust Marine Protected Areas.
🔹 Accelerate pivotal decisions at the international level.
🔹 Shift paradigms to make Blue Natural Capital part of mainstream economics.

Entre Albufeira e o Farol de Alfanzina, esconde-se um tesouro natural: a Pedra do Valado, um dos recifes mais ricos em biodiversidade da costa portuguesa.

O CCMAR liderou a recolha de conhecimento científico e promoveu o diálogo com pescadores e comunidade local, de onde resultou a criação do Parque Natural Marinho do Recife do Algarve – Pedra do Valado.

Mas esta é apenas a primeira etapa. Para proteger verdadeiramente este ecossistema, é preciso mapear, monitorizar e gerir de forma contínua.

No final do mês, voltamos ao mar. Voltamos à Pedra do Valado para reforçar o nosso compromisso: proteger o tesouro do Algarve, juntos.

Fundação Oceano Azul (Oceano Azul Foundation) , Oceanário de Lisboa , Instituto da Conservação da Natureza e das Florestas, Centro de Ciencias do Mar (CCMAR) e parceiros locais estratégicos, vão estar juntos e alinhados nesta missão, porque a proteção do tesouro do Algarve ainda não terminou - está apenas a começar.
