📢 Meet the Speakers | Second Plenary

We are pleased to introduce Joyeeta Gupta, speaker at the Second Plenary of the 17th ESA Conference in Warsaw.

Joyeeta Gupta is Professor of Environment and Development in the Global South at the University of Amsterdam / Universiteit van Amsterdam and the IHE Delft Institute for Water Education. She is also a member of the Amsterdam Global Change Institute.

Her research focuses on environmental governance, sustainable development, climate change, water governance, and the relationship between global environmental challenges, inequality, and justice.

Professor Gupta is Editor-in-Chief of International Environmental Agreements: Politics, Law and Economics and serves on the editorial boards of several journals in environmental governance, law, and sustainability.

She has contributed as a lead author to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with Al Gore, and to the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment. She has also served on the scientific steering committees of major international research programmes, including the Global Water Systems Project and Earth System Governance.

At ESA 2026, her plenary lecture, The Environment, Democracy and Global Constitutionalism, will address how environmental limits are reshaping democracy, international cooperation, and the governance of our shared planet.

📣 We are delighted to announce that, following a highly competitive and enthusiastic Call for Bids, the University of São Paulo (USP), Brazil has been selected to host the 6th ISA Forum of Sociology in 2029. This announcement coincides with the opening of the Congress of the Latin American Sociological Association (ALAS) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, highlighting a vibrant moment for sociology in the region.

We look forward to working closely with the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), led by Ruy Gomes Braga Neto and Angela Alonso, and to the tremendous support of the Brazilian Society of Sociology (SBS) and its president Marco Santana.

O próximo Congresso da World Anthropological Union (WAU) terá lugar no ICS - Instituto de Ciências Sociais da Universidade de Lisboa e no Iscte - Instituto Universitário de Lisboa, entre os dias 31 de agosto e 4 de setembro de 2027.

Sob o tema "A Vida Imaginada", a conferência procura fomentar um diálogo crítico e construtivo sobre como a antropologia pode contribuir ativamente para a construção de futuros mais esperançosos e equitativos. Num tempo marcado pela incerteza e inquietação, perguntamos como pode a nossa disciplina ajudar as pessoas a imaginar e a viver as vidas a que aspiram?

A escolha de Lisboa como cidade anfitriã não é acidental. Em 1974, a Revolução dos Cravos trouxe pacificamente a Portugal o fim de quase cinco décadas de regime autoritário, reavivando os sonhos nacionais de democracia, dignidade e autodeterminação — e é esse o espírito que inspira a imagem do evento. Partindo deste legado de renovação, o congresso propõe-se a refletir sobre o poder da imaginação coletiva na luta por justiça.

Convida-se académicos, profissionais e ativistas a juntarem-se a nós para reexaminar – e redefinir – o papel da antropologia num mundo em que as dinâmicas geopolíticas em mudança tendem a marginalizar abordagens inclusivas, éticas e promotoras de vida. Nestes tempos frágeis, a esperança imaginativa não é um luxo; é uma necessidade. O objetivo é explorar em conjunto como o conhecimento e a prática antropológicas podem ajudar a sustentá-la.
