📢 Meet the Speakers | Second Plenary
We are pleased to introduce Joyeeta Gupta, speaker at the Second Plenary of the 17th ESA Conference in Warsaw.
Joyeeta Gupta is Professor of Environment and Development in the Global South at the University of Amsterdam / Universiteit van Amsterdam and the IHE Delft Institute for Water Education. She is also a member of the Amsterdam Global Change Institute.
Her research focuses on environmental governance, sustainable development, climate change, water governance, and the relationship between global environmental challenges, inequality, and justice.
Professor Gupta is Editor-in-Chief of International Environmental Agreements: Politics, Law and Economics and serves on the editorial boards of several journals in environmental governance, law, and sustainability.
She has contributed as a lead author to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with Al Gore, and to the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment. She has also served on the scientific steering committees of major international research programmes, including the Global Water Systems Project and Earth System Governance.
At ESA 2026, her plenary lecture, The Environment, Democracy and Global Constitutionalism, will address how environmental limits are reshaping democracy, international cooperation, and the governance of our shared planet.
