Caravela Vera Cruz volta a ser distinguida com dois prémios na Tall Ships Stavanger 2026
A Caravela Vera Cruz voltou a destacar-se no panorama internacional ao conquistar mais dois importantes prémios durante a Tall Ships Stavanger 2026, reforçando o prestígio de Portugal num dos maiores encontros mundiais de grandes veleiros.
A embarcação portuguesa foi distinguida com o Prémio de Melhor Entrada em Porto, reconhecimento atribuído à excelência da sua chegada ao porto de Stavanger, destacando a qualidade da apresentação, da manobra e o elevado espírito marinheiro demonstrado perante o público e a organização.
Recebeu ainda o Prémio de Melhor Cruise-in-Company, distinção que valoriza a participação na etapa de confraternização entre portos, onde o espírito de cooperação, amizade e partilha entre tripulações de diferentes nacionalidades tendo assumido um papel central, refletindo assim os valores promovidos pela Sail Training International.
Estes galardões constituem mais um importante reconhecimento do trabalho desenvolvido pela APORVELA – Associação Portuguesa de Treino de Vela, pela tripulação permanente, pelos voluntários e pelos jovens formandos que, ao longo desta campanha internacional, representaram Portugal com profissionalismo, dedicação e entusiasmo.
Construída como réplica de uma caravela portuguesa do século XV, a Vera Cruz é hoje um dos mais relevantes símbolos vivos do legado marítimo nacional. Participa e organiza em Portugal regularmente a Tall Ships Races, assumindo um papel de destaque como museu vivo, embaixada itinerante de Portugal e plataforma de formação de jovens através do mar, promovendo simultaneamente a divulgação da história e da cultura marítima portuguesas.
As distinções conquistadas em Stavanger reforçam o estatuto da Caravela Vera Cruz como uma das embarcações mais emblemáticas da frota internacional de grandes veleiros e demonstram que Portugal continua a afirmar-se no mar através da excelência das suas tradições náuticas, da dedicação das suas tripulações e da capacidade de formar novas gerações de marinheiros.
A campanha de 2026 teve início em Lisboa, no dia 2 de março, até à chegada a Stavanger, levou a Caravela Vera Cruz a percorrer, o Mar Mediterrâneo, o Oceano Atlântico e o Mar do Norte, percorrendo milhares de milhas náuticas, tendo atracado em sete países, visitado mais de 40 cidades e recebido largos milhares de visitantes a bordo. Afirmando-se como um verdadeiro embaixador itinerante de Portugal. A campanha prossegue agora até Portugal, estando prevista a chegada da Caravela Vera Cruz a Lisboa no próximo dia 12 de agosto, onde concluirá mais uma missão internacional de promoção de Portugal, da formação de jovens através do mar e da valorização do património marítimo nacional.
Na etapa entre Antuérpia e Stavanger, a Caravela Vera Cruz foi o navio-escola escolhido pela Royal Sea Cadets, a mais antiga e prestigiada organização de treino de mar para jovens do Reino Unido, para receber a bordo nove jovens britânicos, proporcionando-lhes a oportunidade de viver uma realidade diferente daquela a que estão habituados. Esta experiência reforçou o intercâmbio cultural e a cooperação entre duas das mais antigas instituições dedicadas à formação de jovens através do mar, estreitando os laços entre Portugal e o Reino Unido.
Mais uma vez, a Caravela Vera Cruz deu pleno significado ao lema que orienta a APORVELA e que se encontra inscrito na sua bandeira — Per Mare Pro Juventute — demonstrando que a missão de formar jovens através do mar continua tão atual e necessária hoje como no passado, tanto a nível nacional como internacional.
Com estas duas novas distinções, a Caravela Vera Cruz continua a enriquecer um notável palmarés internacional, afirmando-se como uma das embarcações mais reconhecidas e premiadas da frota mundial de grandes veleiros. Mais do que os troféus conquistados, estes prémios representam o reconhecimento de um projeto que, há 45 anos, a APORVELA desenvolve em prol da juventude, utilizando o mar como ferramenta de educação, cidadania e desenvolvimento humano. Ao longo de mais de quatro décadas, a associação tem levado o nome de Portugal aos quatro cantos do mundo, mantendo vivo o espírito e demonstrando que a formação de jovens através do mar continua a ser uma missão tão atual quanto indispensável.
Apesar do profundo reconhecimento internacional alcançado e das inúmeras solicitações para participar em iniciativas nacionais e internacionais, o projeto da APORVELA e da Caravela Vera Cruz continua a enfrentar significativos desafios decorrentes da insuficiência de apoios financeiros estáveis.
A continuidade desta missão, que a APORVELA prossegue há 45 anos em prol da juventude, utilizando o mar como instrumento de educação e formação, depende de um compromisso mais sólido da sociedade portuguesa, através do envolvimento de entidades públicas e privadas.
O reconhecimento internacional conquistado pela Caravela Vera Cruz demonstra o valor deste projeto; importa agora assegurar que esse reconhecimento seja igualmente acompanhado, a nível nacional, pelos meios necessários para preservar este património marítimo único e garantir a continuidade da sua missão ao serviço das futuras gerações.

Caravela Vera Cruz Honoured with Two More Awards at Tall Ships Stavanger 2026
The Caravela Vera Cruz has once again distinguished herself on the international stage by winning two prestigious awards during Tall Ships Stavanger 2026, further enhancing Portugal’s reputation at one of the world’s largest gatherings of tall ships.
The Portuguese vessel received the Best Port Entry Award, recognising the excellence of her arrival in the Port of Stavanger, highlighting the quality of her presentation, seamanship, and manoeuvring skills, as well as the outstanding maritime spirit demonstrated before the public and the event organisers.
She also received the Best Cruise-in-Company Award, honouring her participation in the Cruise-in-Company leg, where cooperation, friendship and the sharing of experiences between crews of different nationalities played a central role, perfectly reflecting the values promoted by Sail Training International.
These awards represent yet another important recognition of the work carried out by APORVELA – Portuguese Sail Training Association, its permanent crew, volunteers and the many young trainees who, throughout this international voyage, represented Portugal with professionalism, dedication and enthusiasm.
Built as a replica of a 15th-century Portuguese caravel, Vera Cruz is today one of the most significant living symbols of Portugal’s maritime heritage. She regularly takes part in the Tall Ships Races and also plays an active role in organising Tall Ships events in Portugal, serving as a living museum, a travelling ambassador for Portugal, and an exceptional platform for youth sail training, while simultaneously promoting Portuguese maritime history and culture.
The awards received in Stavanger further reinforce Caravela Vera Cruz’s status as one of the most iconic vessels in the international tall ships fleet, demonstrating that Portugal continues to distinguish itself at sea through the excellence of its maritime traditions, the dedication of its crews, and its commitment to educating new generations of seafarers.
The 2026 campaign began in Lisbon on 2 March. By the time she reached Stavanger, Caravela Vera Cruz had sailed across the Mediterranean Sea, the Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea, covering thousands of nautical miles. During the voyage she called at ports in seven countries, visited more than 40 cities, and welcomed many thousands of visitors on board, further establishing herself as a true travelling ambassador for Portugal. The campaign will continue until her scheduled return to Lisbon on 12 August, where she will conclude yet another international mission dedicated to promoting Portugal, providing youth sail training, and preserving the nation’s maritime heritage.
During the passage between Antwerp and Stavanger, Caravela Vera Cruz was selected by the Royal Sea Cadets, the United Kingdom’s oldest and most prestigious youth sail training organisation, to welcome nine British cadets on board. This unique opportunity allowed them to experience a very different environment from the one they are accustomed to, strengthening cultural exchange and cooperation between two of the world’s oldest organisations dedicated to educating young people through the sea, while further strengthening the bonds between Portugal and the United Kingdom.
Once again, Caravela Vera Cruz gave full meaning to APORVELA’s guiding motto, proudly displayed on its flag — Per Mare Pro Juventute (“Through the Sea, For Youth”) — demonstrating that the mission of educating young people through the sea remains as relevant and necessary today as ever, both nationally and internationally.
With these two new distinctions, Caravela Vera Cruz continues to build an outstanding international record, confirming her place among the world’s most recognised and highly awarded tall ships. More than simply trophies, these awards acknowledge a project that APORVELA has pursued for 45 years, using the sea as a powerful tool for education, citizenship and personal development. For more than four decades, the Association has carried Portugal’s name around the world, keeping its spirit alive and demonstrating that educating young people through the sea remains a mission that is as relevant today as it is essential.
Despite the international recognition achieved and the numerous invitations to participate in national and international initiatives, the APORVELA and Caravela Vera Cruz project continues to face significant challenges due to the lack of stable financial support.
The continuation of this mission, which APORVELA has pursued for the past 45 years in the service of young people through education and sail training, depends upon a stronger commitment from Portuguese society, involving both public institutions and private partners. The international recognition earned by Caravela Vera Cruz clearly demonstrates the value of this project; the challenge now is to ensure that this recognition is matched at home with the support required to preserve this unique maritime heritage and guarantee that its mission continues to serve future generations.
