Independent Midwives Association of Namibia She realized the need of a Midwives Association in Namibia, since we lack a national network and have been excluded from the knowledge exchange globally.

IMANA is non-profit association (incorporated under Section 21) with a vision to empower midwives through professional development, education, and regulatory frameworks to promote the delivery of quality midwifery care in Namibia. Background: IMANA is a non-profit association (incorporated under Section 21) initiated by the Midwife Hilma Shikwambi following her attendance of the International Midw

ifery conference in Prague in July 2014. Mrs Shikwambi assembled a group of Midwives whom she felt are passionate about the profession and highly dedicated. Vision: To empower Midwives through professional development, education and regulations, to improve the quality of midwifery care in Namibia. Mission: To promote and strengthen the midwifery practice to the highest level of professionalism in the provision of quality midwifery services at all levels of health care in order to improve the health of women, newborns and families in Namibia. National importance: According to statistics, the maternal and neonatal mortality rates in Namibia are above our target of Millennium Development Goals (MDG) 4 and 5. Through improving knowledge and skills of midwives the association will make a contribution towards reducing the high levels of maternal and neonatal complications within the country.

Every year, midwife students join the commemoration of the International Day of the Midwife, hosted by the Ministry of Health and Social Services-Namibia, UNFPA, Independent Midwives Association of Namibia and other partners. During these events, their skills and capacity are strengthened, preparing them to ensure safe pregnancies, healthier newborns, and healthier families in the future.
