Startup Lisboa is a incubator that supports the creation of companies and their first years of activity. Founded in 2011 by the Lisbon Municipality, Montepio Bank and IAPMEI – Portuguese Agency for Competitiveness and Innovation, it's a private non-profit association that provides entrepreneurs and companies with office space as well as a support structure. We provide mentoring, link to strategic partners, access to investment, help with business basics, networking activities, and communication services.

🤖 What happens when AI is built with purpose?

This week, AI with Purpose brought together 120+ participants at AIhub by Unicorn Factory Lisboa for an afternoon dedicated to one question: how can AI be used to create meaningful impact?

As part of Lisbon AI Week, startups and experts from Engineers Hub, greenhub and healthhub explored how AI is already being applied to some of the challenges that matter most. From building more resilient cities and managing resources more effectively to extending the reach of healthcare and strengthening prevention.

Through talks with Pedro Fernandes (TEKEVER), Francisco Pais de Sousa (L.ai - Holistic Waste Management), and Pedro Maurício (Tucuvi), startup showcases with Manie, Constructer.ai, AiTecServand, Simpl.care, UpSpeech, Usawa Care, Typeble, BloodFlow and Lampsy, we saw AI being put to work across urban resilience, sustainability and health, with solutions designed around real-world needs.

The day ended with a look beyond today, exploring AI’s long-term impact on society with Rodrigo Fernandes, Co-founder of Augusta Labs, followed by a networking showcase sunset where founders and participants had the opportunity to connect and discover more solutions from across the ecosystem.

A big thank you to all the speakers, startups and participants who joined us and helped make the conversation possible.

Because as AI continues to evolve, the question isn’t only what can we build? It’s also what do we choose to build, and why?

Today, we brought together MEO, Altice Labs and a curated group of startups from the Unicorn Factory Lisboa community for a breakfast focused on technology, innovation and potential use cases.

📚 És educador e queres levar inovação para a sala de aula?

O Educator Innovation Program, com o apoio da José de Mello e da Sonae, começa já no dia 15 de setembro.

O programa é para professores que querem explorar novas formas de trabalhar o empreendedorismo com os seus alunos.

Ao longo do programa, os educadores vão trabalhar temas como:
* Identificação de problemas e desenvolvimento de soluções
* Criação e validação de ideias de startup
* Produto e modelo de negócio
* Ferramentas de inteligência artificial

Os participantes terão ainda acesso a uma plataforma com guias e recursos práticos para apoiar a aplicação dos conteúdos em contexto escolar.

O programa tem duas fases:
1. 2 dias de workshops práticos, nos dias 15 e 16 de setembro, em português, nos hubs da Unicorn Factory Lisboa
2. Mentorias e acompanhamento online ao longo do ano letivo

O programa é dirigido a educadores do ensino básico ao superior, de escolas públicas, privadas e internacionais.

📚 Are you an educator who wants to bring innovation into the classroom?

The Educator Innovation Program, supported by José de Mello and Sonae, starts on September 15th.

The program is for teachers who want to explore new ways of working on entrepreneurship with their students.

Throughout the program, educators will work on topics such as:
* Identifying problems and developing solutions
* Creating and validating startup ideas
* Product and business model
* Artificial intelligence tools

Participants will also have access to a platform with guides and practical resources to support applying the content in a school setting.

The program has two phases:
1. 2 days of hands-on workshops, on September 15th and 16th, in Portuguese, at Unicorn Factory Lisboa’s hubs
2. Mentorship and support online throughout the school year

The program is aimed at educators from primary to higher education, from public, private, and international schools.

We’re looking for a Marketing Intern (Designer) to join the Unicorn Factory Lisboa team and help shape the visual identity behind our campaigns, events, and community.

From launching programs and supporting major events to creating content seen by thousands of founders, investors, and innovators, you’ll be designing for one of Europe’s leading startup ecosystems.

You’ll be a great fit if you:
- Have a background in Design, Marketing, or Communications
- Have a strong eye for design (Canva is a must, Adobe is a plus)

This program runs on the commitment of our Global Youth Partners — José de Mello and Sonae — who open real challenges to teenagers and bet on their ideas, turning a summer program into a launchpad. We’re also grateful to our location partners, ISEG Lisbon, Católica-Lisbon SBE, FEP Faculdade de Economia e Gestão da Universidade do Porto and Liga Portugal for hosting these bootcamps and giving our teams the space to build.

8 projects, including Unplug (turning screen-time limits into real-world skills) and LxQuest (turning the city into a quest board with local business rewards)

📍 Católica Lisbon SBE, Lisbon — Challenge: Helping families stay connected in busy lives
10 projects, including Luna (a sleep-optimizing app that locks your phone at bedtime) and Foodlie (making mealtimes easier with picky eaters)

📍 FEP, Porto — Challenge by Sonae MC: How might AI help Continente invent better products, processes, or services?
5 projects, including Green Talk (an AI speaker on supermarket shelves explaining sustainable choices with verified facts) and My Shelf (co-creating new products through community challenges)

Real entrepreneurs showed up to challenge, mentor, and inspire our teams: Rodrigo Figueiredo (Upspeech), Francisco Martins (Cozecare | Saúde Mental), Vicente Mayer Garção (Lampsy - Invisible Epilepsy Monitoring), João Aroso, Tomás Pimenta da Silva (dress me), João Santos (Tilect), and Nuno Gonçalves (Curya). Their time and honesty made these projects sharper — and made our students feel like founders from day one.

The conversation focused on the challenges and opportunities founders are navigating as AI continues to reshape the way startups build, grow and scale. No slides. No pitches. Just honest conversations, practical experiences and active participation.

At Unicorn Factory Lisboa, we believe that building a stronger startup ecosystem means creating meaningful connections between founders and the right partners, expertise and perspectives to help them navigate opportunities and challenges as they scale.
