We have had an active branch in Puerto Rico for over 40 years! http://sanjuan-pr.aauw.net Puerto Rico AAUW seeks to promote equity for women and girls in Puerto Rico. We have a single branch at this time, San Juan AAUW. Locally, we raise money for education opportunities for women, including scholarships, fellowships and grants. We will assist community members, individual or organizations, in the application process for these funds. In 2013-14, we were given a Community Action Grant by AAUW National. We used this money to do a pilot project: A series of therapeutic writing workshops for survivors of domestic violence still living in shelters. Continuing and expanding this project is one of our goals for our fundraising. Also in 2013-14, we raised money to send three young Puerto Rican women to the National Conference for Women Student Leaders in June of 2014. Fundraising is on-going to do the same thing in 2015. Our local branch conducts workshops for middle school and high school girls every year on career choices, introducing them to women in here in there field who can act as mentors and role-models. We also hold monthly meetings on topics of interest to our members. Recent examples are Human Trafficking in Puerto Rico, Women Artists represented in the Puerto Rico Art Museum, Women's Health - Half the Sky, pay equity, violence against women, etc. All of our meetings are free and open to the public. In fact, we encourage anyone interested to join our mailing list to get notifications of meetings and other events. Knowing that there are many, many topics and projects we could tackle in Puerto Rico, we are eagerly recruiting new members to the organization. AAUW National conducts important research on issues like pay inequity, harassment of girls in schools, street harassment, women in the STEM fields. Our local organization works to bring this research into the public debate in Puerto Rico.
