A Tale to be Told
Arooha Dar (Founder/Chairperson)
I used to see them daily, at the main gate of my university, begging and selling tissue papers. Like every passerby, they bug me as well and each time I asked them to go away since I always got irritated of their clingy behavior. They were many, all aged between 8-10 years.
One day, I saw something strange. Those children had gathered around one of their fellows. They were indulged in some ‘serious business’. Out of my curiosity, I went near them to inspect. Surprisingly, the activity was not something I expected. Out of all, one was teaching ABC to his fellows, and rests of them were actually taking this ‘class’ with concentration. It swelled my heart with delight. I started conversing and when I asked them about their future goal from learning, their response moved me. They all spontaneously replied, “Humein baray ho kar NED me parhna hai” (We want to study at NED University once we grow up). Their reaction clicked my heart. That moment I decided that I would contribute anything in my capacity to help them. It was Friday then. I pondered over it throughout my weekend for ideas to educate them. All I knew that I have to do something for these deprived children. They had a will to study but lacked resources. At that instance, all I could do was to set up a classroom and teach them, on my own, since the lack of resources was my constraint as well. From Monday, I initiated a small set up, merely at a footpath and began to teach them. Eventually, this became a part of my routine. Every time I met them, I bring something to eat, for cherishing this “teacher-student bond”. I teach them daily for like an hour or so. After a passage of time, I began to realize that this is not enough of what I can do. Nor my gesture is going to work for them in the long run; neither will assist them in their future building. For a secured future, their admission in schools is inevitable. This thought took me past my comfort zone. Now, I really wanted to do it, that I knew, would not be possible without a support system. I deliberated the idea with my mates and they all extremely supported me in this noble cause.
After 6 months, we got a room on the premises of our university, where we managed to conduct proper classes for those children and made them able to clear the entry tests of different schools. We launched our welfare organization as ‘Tadrees Foundation’, and received an overwhelming response from university and outside. Today, there are 50 members in Team Tadrees, which are working enthusiastically, and by the grace of Almighty, we are working on our school that has a capacity of 200 children.
