Levon Aronian Stuns Magnus Carlsen to Win Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour Finals! 🏆♟️

Cape Town, South Africa – Levon Aronian has once again shown the chess world that age is nothing but a number, defeating World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen in the Grand Finale to become the Champion of the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour 2025 Finals in Cape Town!

In Game 1, Aronian, with the White pieces, delivered a vintage masterpiece. He emerged from the opening with a clear advantage, steering the game into a strategically dominant position and converting with trademark precision. It was a commanding win—no miracles, no blunders, just pure, controlled dominance against the strongest player on the planet.

Under pressure but unshaken, Levon needed only a draw in Game 2 with the Black pieces—and he delivered exactly that. With calm defense and accurate play, he neutralized Magnus’s attempts to complicate the position, securing the half-point that sealed match victory and the tournament title.

This triumph marks Aronian’s second leg win on the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour this year, after his earlier success in Las Vegas. With the Cape Town title added to his resume, Levon heads home not only with a glittering trophy but also a $200,000 USD prize—richly deserved after an absolutely spectacular run.

Huge congratulations to Levon Aronian for an incredible performance on the biggest freestyle stage of them all. Levon – what a guy, what a champion! 👏

Ian Nepomniachtchi Wins Vugar Gashimov Memorial 2025! 🏆♟️

Ian “Nepo” Nepomniachtchi is the Champion of the Vugar Gashimov Memorial – Chess Super Tournament 2025!

Nepo finished on an impressive 13/20, tying with Vladimir Fedoseev at the top of the standings—but it was Nepomniachtchi’s superior rapid score that gave him the edge and the title. In a tournament where every half-point mattered, his speed chess prowess once again proved decisive.

The key moment came in the final round, where Nepomniachtchi scored a crucial win over Aydin Suleymanli. With everything on the line, he rose to the occasion, navigating the complications with trademark confidence and converting the must‑win game to secure first place.

This victory is extra special: the World Blitz Co-Champion has now won the Gashimov Memorial for the second year in a row! Back-to-back titles at such a prestigious event underline Nepo’s status as one of the most dangerous and dynamic players in the world.

Huge congratulations to Ian Nepomniachtchi on an outstanding performance and another brilliant crown added to his collection. 🎉
