🌿💚 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲! 🐢🌊

Earlier today, One Pawikan Initiative had the privilege of being invited to the Biodiversity Awareness Program of the Philippine Women’s University Jose Abad Santos Memorial School (PWU-JASMS) Quezon City Campus, engaging with students from Grades 9, 10, and 11.

It was a short but fun and meaningful session! The students actively participated, shared their thoughts, and interacted with our resource speaker throughout the discussion, making the conversation on biodiversity conservation lively and engaging. 🌱

We are grateful to PWU-JASMS for creating opportunities for young learners to better understand our country's rich biodiversity, the challenges facing our ecosystems, and the important role they can play as young environmental stewards.

At One Pawikan Initiative, we believe that conservation begins with awareness—and awareness becomes meaningful when young people are empowered to take action. 💚🌏

Pinawalang-bisa ng Korte Suprema ang Fisheries Administrative Order No. 266 (FAO 266), ang regulasyong nagpapatupad ng Vessel Monitoring Measures (VMM). Ang VMM ay teknolohiyang nagbibigay sa mga awtoridad ng kakayahang masubaybayan real-time ang mga komersyal na sasakyang pangisda at matukoy kung pumapasok sila sa mga ipinagbabawal na lugar, kabilang ang mga marine protected area (MPA) at ang 15-kilometrong municipal waters na nakalaan para sa maliliit na mangingisda.

Ano ang mawawala kapag pinatay ang sistemang tumutulong sa pagsugpo sa illegal, unreported, unregulated fishing? Paano na masisigurong nabibigyan ng panahon ang karagatang makapahinga at manumbalik? Paano na makakasunod ang Pilipinas sa mga pandaigdigang pamantayan sa seafood traceability?

𝐑𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐨𝐫 𝐒𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐞, 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐝 𝐔𝐩 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞! 🌿💚

From July 27–29, 2026, One Pawikan Initiative, in partnership with De La Salle Santiago Zobel School, successfully kicked off the Social Formation Program at the Las Piñas–Parañaque Wetland Park.

Our Grade 7 students immersed themselves in the beauty and importance of Manila Bay and the Las Piñas–Parañaque Wetland Park, proving that meaningful conservation starts with simple actions and empowered youth. Together, they took part in a coastal cleanup, explored the Wetland Museum, listened to an environmental talk, and discovered the park's rich birdlife through a guided birdwatching activity—all facilitated by the One Pawikan Initiative team.

This is only the beginning! 🌊 The Social Formation Program will continue through September 2026, giving even more students the opportunity to experience nature, learn about conservation, and become future stewards of our wetlands.

🌿💚 BAKAWANIHAN PARA SA MATATAG NA PAMILYANG BATAEÑO: World Mangrove Day 2026 Celebration

From July 24–26, 2026, One Pawikan Initiative joined the World Mangrove Day 2026 Celebration in Orani, Bataan, alongside government agencies, people's organizations, NGOs, and community volunteers in promoting mangrove conservation and community stewardship.

The three-day celebration featured a Mangrove Plogging that collected 96 sacks of waste, ZumBAKAWAN, and the Pistang Bakawan, highlighting environmental education, cultural activities, and the blessing of the mangrove conservation area.

As part of the celebration, we also participated in a biodiversity assessment at the Orani Mangrove Experimental Forest (OMEF) with Wetlands International Philippines, the Tubo-tubo Fisherfolks Association, Mangrove Matters PH, Neymatophores, and other partners, documenting 13 mangrove species and various wildlife. Together, these efforts strengthen science-based conservation and community action for healthier mangrove ecosystems.

Thank you to all our partners for making this meaningful celebration possible. Together, we continue to protect our mangroves and build more resilient coastal communities. 🌱

🌊🐢 𝐄𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐭 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐬!

Last July 18, 2026, One Pawikan Initiative, in partnership with the Samahan ng Labac Pawikan Patrollers (SLPP), successfully conducted the Marine Turtle Biology and Basic Conservation Strategies and Management training for the students of De La Salle Araneta University – College of Veterinary Medicine and Agricultural Sciences (CVMAS) as part of their Environmental Science, Protection and Management course.

Held at the Labac Pawikan Conservatory in Brgy. Labac, Naic, Cavite, the activity provided students with an immersive learning experience on marine turtle biology, conservation strategies, and management in Manila Bay. Through lectures, scenario-based simulations, and hands-on training, participants gained practical knowledge and skills essential for protecting one of our country's most iconic marine wildlife.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to De La Salle Araneta University – CVMAS for partnering with us and to the Samahan ng Labac Pawikan Patrollers for their invaluable support in making this activity possible. Together, we continue to inspire future conservation leaders and strengthen our collective efforts to protect Philippine marine turtles and their habitats.

🌳🟫🔍 𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐎 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐂𝐊 𝐎𝐅 𝐌𝐔𝐃 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐌𝐀𝐍𝐆𝐑𝐎𝐕𝐄𝐒

✨ As part of the three-day celebration of 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔, Wetlands International Philippines braved the knee-deep mud and complex mangroves of the 𝐎𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐢 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭 (𝐎𝐌𝐄𝐅).

🌱 Together with our Batch 2026 Interns, the Tubo-tubo Fisherfolks Association, One Pawikan Initiative, Mangrove Matters PH, Neymatophores, and youth volunteers, we assessed the flora and fauna present in the OMEF Site.

This initiative was supported by the Provincial Government ENRO Bataan following the turnover of the site to the care of TFA, a people's organization in Sitio Pulo, Kabalutan, Orani, Bataan.

During the assessment, we documented 13 species of mangroves, most notable of which are the 𝘚𝘰𝘯𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘢 𝘤𝘢𝘴𝘦𝘰𝘭𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘴, 𝘚𝘰𝘯𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘢 𝘢𝘭𝘣𝘢, 𝘈𝘷𝘪𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘯𝘪𝘢 𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘢, 𝘙𝘩𝘪𝘻𝘰𝘱𝘩𝘰𝘳𝘢 𝘮𝘶𝘤𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘢, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘙𝘩𝘪𝘻𝘰𝘱𝘩𝘰𝘳𝘢 𝘢𝘱𝘪𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘢. There were also mangrove crabs, hermit crabs, collared kingfishers, purple herons, black-crowned night herons, egrets, among others, present in the site.

Assessments like this are important to see how the ecosystem evolves over time and how the community can properly manage the forest. We laud the Bataan Provincial Government, PG-ENRO, and the Tubo-tubo Fisherfolks Association for their commitment to safeguard and protect the mangroves of Orani, Bataan.

The OPI team is heading to Orani, Bataan on July 24–26, 2026 to celebrate the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem with the local fisherfolk. Join us as we honor the mangroves that protect our coasts, support marine life, and strengthen climate resilience.
